I placed an order for a 2022 Telluride SX Prestige Nightfall Edition w/AWD during the first week of January 2022. My salesman, Logan (Tyler) Lebrun, quoted a 4-6 month wait due to the chip shortage an Nightfall Edition w/AWD during the first week of January 2022. My salesman, Logan (Tyler) Lebrun, quoted a 4-6 month wait due to the chip shortage and other factors related to vehicle manufacturing and logistics. I was not in a rush and was fine waiting. I informed Logan that I had a 2019 Sorrento SX-Limited to trade towards the Telluride and that I received multiple flyers from his dealership, Moritz Kia of Alliance, asking me to bring it in for an appraisal. The flyers referenced my vehicle's Kelly Blue Book (KBB) value of about $34,000 if it were in "fair" condition. According to KBB.com, a "fair" condition has "some mechanical or cosmetic defects and needs servicing but is still in reasonable running condition." I would consider my Sorrento in "very good" condition, which KBB says has "minor cosmetic defects and is in excellent mechanical condition." Fast forward eight months: On September 10th, after eight months of waiting, I received a text from Logan because they had a vehicle on the lot that was identical to what I ordered, except for the exterior and interior colors. He also advised me during this conversation that they were no longer building 2022 models and that I would have to place a new order for a 2023 model. I didn't want to wait for another eight months for my new Telluride, so I headed to the dealership to check out the one they had on the lot. I quickly decided that I liked the colors (better than the ones I selected) and decided to move forward with the purchase. But this is where the experience went downhill. It was time for my Sorrento's appraisal. After a brief wait, I received a shockingly low offer of roughly $26,000. Considering the 5 or 6 flyers I received, most recently at the beginning of September, I asked to speak with the appraiser. The person who introduced themself was Shannon Spruiell. I asked Shannon: "How did you determine the value of my vehicle? The flyers I receive each month from you all quoted a KBB value of $29K+." He responded by saying that they don't use KBB and that he determined the value of my vehicle by auctions. I asked why they would include the KBB fair market value on the flyers if they did not use it to determine a car's value, and he did not have an answer. He then made a truly shocking comment. He said the that since I "only paid $33K a few years ago," the amount they offered was fair. Interestingly, I had not shared how much I paid nor what I owed since it was irrelevant up to this point. It became apparent that I was dealing with shady people and I was shocked that they would not honor any of the flyers they sent me, even the most recent one I received just days prior, dated 8/30. It was a remarkably frustrating experience that shows how this dealership does business, at least in my case. I will use the dealership's service department for convenience, but I will not purchase another vehicle from them. If you are interested in buying a car or selling your old car, I would consider looking elsewhere. When I have time, I also plan to contact Kia's Corporate Offices to provide insight into my experience. Hopefully, they can work with this dealership to ensure their practices are not misleading.
