Bottom line up front: I'm giving a 3-star to balance out my overall experience with this dealership from the past to present. I give them a 5-star rating for my past visits for oil changes and tire rotatio my overall experience with this dealership from the past to present. I give them a 5-star rating for my past visits for oil changes and tire rotations. I give them a 1-star rating for the potentially nefarious situation I'm about to describe now. (It's a long story. Sorry.) To begin with, I have been to this dealership at least 10 times for basic things such as oil changes and tire rotations. I never once ran into a problem. (Hence the 5-star rating for this portion of their service. They're fast, friendly, efficient, and pretty decently priced.) However, based on a recent experience when taking my Acadia there due to a "check engine" notification on my dashboard, I ran into a serious issue. The service rep reviewed the code (OBD2 Code P0119, Engine Coolant Temperature sensor), and said it was simply a malfunctioning sensor that should be replaced. I told the service rep, "Thanks! I'll pick up a part from Advanced Auto and attempt to do it myself." I then drove away. Five minutes later -- as I'm literally about halfway home -- I received a call from the same service rep and the rep stated (paraphrased of course), "Sir, you really should come back here and let us examine your vehicle ASAP. After you drove away, we saw a pool of coolant on our shop floor where you were parked while checking in and having your code reviewed. We think you have a bad leak somewhere, which would explain the check engine light notification." Well, my spider senses tingled a bit. I immediately thought two things: (1) "My car was turned off almost the whole time I was there. How did it leak so much?" (2) "I drove over 100 miles today (round-trip from Jacksonville to Wilmington) with the code on my dash. If the leak was that bad, wouldn't my Acadia have run hot?" After having these thoughts, I decided to first perform my own test before driving back to the dealership. I made a pit stop in an empty area of a parking lot, kept my Acadia running for at least three minutes, and never once saw a drop of fluid hit the ground -- other than the occasional drip of condensation from my air conditioner since it was summer time. I then drove back to the dealership. The same service rep met me and recommended I kill the engine to avoid any additional leaking. The individual escorted me to where my vehicle had been parked earlier and showed me a pool of pink fluid -- presumably my engine coolant -- that had recently spilled onto their floor. I didn't tell the service rep about my own test I had just performed. I just said, "What do you want to do?" The rep responded along the lines of wanting to "take it into the shop and pressure test it" (or something like that). I said, "Okay. Sounds good." Within 30 minutes the rep came in with a recommendation -- "You're water pump is leaking pretty bad. We highly recommend you replace it." When I asked how much it would cost, the rep informed me that between parts and labor it would be around $1,100 (and the rep even showed me the cost breakdown on a paper quote held in hand.) The service rep then said, "Why don't you let someone drive you home, keep your vehicle here, and we'll get to it first thing in the morning?" (It was getting late and they apparently didn't have time to fix it before closing. I think the rep said something about needing to get a gasket shipped to their location overnight as well.) I politely declined and said, "No thanks. My house is only 10 minutes away. Can you please just top off my fluid? I'll gladly pay you. And then perhaps tomorrow after I've done some additional research I might hit you back up for service." The service rep became quite insistent. "We have your Acadia in the bay now. The leak was really bad. I'm not sure you can make it home. You sure you don't want to reconsider?" I said, "No thanks. Please just top off the fluids -- I'll pay you if needed -- and I think I'll be good to get home." The rep said, "Okay, let me get your vehicle ready for you." At that point, I walked outside and waited for the rep to bring me my vehicle. Within a couple minutes I was in my car and driving home. I made it home perfectly fine. I monitored my idling vehicle for any leakage for a solid 10 minutes (I timed it) that evening. (Keep in mind, I did this test in my freshly power washed driveway that would've shown pink fluid clearly). I monitored it again the next morning for another 10 minutes. (Also timed. And also in that same freshly power washed driveway.) I then decided to watch some YouTube videos to see how difficult it is to replace this Engine Coolant Temperature sensor that triggered the check engine light in the first place. After seeing it was a bit more than I was willing to bite off, I called the Camp Lejeune Firestone, set up an afternoon appointment, and had my vehicle repaired that same day for $118 (for the sensor and labor). I have not had any issues to this day (and it's been a few weeks). No leaking. No more check engine notice. No nothing. After taking a few days to cool off (because I was legit mad that I had presumably been attempted to be scammed), I decided to call Moore Buick. I spoke with the same service rep, informed the individual of all that had happened since the beginning of this saga, and highly recommended they review the camera footage to ensure the person who checked in behind me that day wasn't the one with the leak. Not sure what happened since then. I've chosen to simply make this post and put this all behind me. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. (And hint --> it's all small stuff.) But I did want to make people aware of this. Bottom line, I don't want to put anyone's job in jeopardy, especially during these trying times that we've had in 2020 and 2021. But I also don't want to see people potentially pay an arm and leg for things not needed. To that point, I highly recommend people do their own testing -- if within their capabilities -- and then make the decision they see best. More
