They apparently did not see the utility in that, so their loss is your gain. A member of our family took a Jeep in for repair. He received a call a short time later stating "they needed to get a look in the motor" and asked his permission. Being stranded without a vehicle, and having little auto knowledge he agreed. No mention of price for that was made (and yes, the owner of the jeep should have asked but he trusted the dealership..mistake). At about 8:30 pm... the owner of the jeep receives a text with a hand scrawled estimate not on any letterhead, apprising him that the repairs would be $9302.59. Keep in mind, total value of the vehicle is 10-12K. When the vehicle owner balked at such a ridiculously high estimate, the tech (presumably) texted him back with the equivalent of "let me speak with the manager and see if we can get it lower". Having spent well over half a century on this earth and having many vehicles serviced, I can assure you this is not how service business is handled. There is a set mark up on parts, and a set hourly labor fee. It is not negotiable as if one was haggling on a used care price. Owner of the vehicle asked that Jeep be returned to its original state, he would pick up the following morning. It was at this point that he was informed there would be a $600.00 fee for the diagnosis. Not only ludicrously high, but not revealed when they asked for permission to "look into the motor". An attempt was made to placate him by offering to put it towards the utterly ridiculously inflated estimate he was given if he had the repairs done at the dealership. Vehicle was taken that day to a very reputable repair shop (shout to Lake Auto, Miami Lakes). Vehicle was examined, an estimate of the repairs was sent, on the company letterhead, followed by a text of explanation and a phone call. Here is the kicker, the cost was $2434.81. No diagnosis fee. That amounts to 25% of the cost this dealership wanted to charge him. The dealership was willing to charge a 4X markup. For reference, replacing the entire motor with a new one would have been about half the dealership estimate. I know, I have done it on a Jeep. Attempting to take advantage of people is not good business. It is my hope that anyone reading this is saved money and frustration, and that you will look elsewhere (Hello Lake Auto!) to have your service needs met in a professional and honest manner. I personally would not buy a vehicle from people I could not trust either. Would be happy to amend this if they replied, apologized/explained, and refunded part of the gouging fee, but I am relatively confident that will not be an issue. I do have screen shots that will show this review to factual. Choose wisely people. More
