While visiting family in Mandeville, 600 miles from home, my 2018 white Mercedes-Benz GLC300 died in the middle of a road on December 1, 2020. I contacted Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assist, who directed me to h my 2018 white Mercedes-Benz GLC300 died in the middle of a road on December 1, 2020. I contacted Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assist, who directed me to have it towed to MB of Covington, which I did. They had the car for three days, during which they performed the needed repair under warranty; this repair is satisfactory, so far. But they also said I needed 4 new tires, that the tires were worn down nearly to the warning bars, and quoted $1,692.45. I questioned this because the car had only 15,984 miles (per their work order) and the tires on the car are rated by Pirelli at 65,000 miles, and I had inspected the tires before leaving home and found them to appear lightly used. Also, when the car was serviced by my home dealer in October, they did not mention needing tires. I did not have the tires replaced. I picked the car up from MB of Covington on December 3, 2020. Upon returning home I had my local dealer examine the tires. They verified that they are indeed worn out, and could not explain how they could have been so worn after such low mileage. They do not show abnormal wear, such as from lack of rotation or poor alignment; they just have a lot more than 15,984 miles on them. While I realize this is circumstantial evidence, the only reasonable conclusion from these circumstances is that Mercedes-Benz of Covington replaced my lightly used tires with a worn-out set to try to sell me tires I didn't need. I speculate that had I paid them $1,692.45, they might well have reinstalled my own tires, or might have sold them to another customer as new. More
