After I left, I realized that Frankie had never returned my driver's license to me. When I texted him to ask about my license, he didn't respond for over two hours. Eventually, I called him. He confirmed that he still had my license but offered no apology. 2. Like most car dealerships, McGrath is offering home delivery and at-home test drives during the pandemic. I scheduled an at-home test drive with a vehicle on 9/7/20. Frankie agreed to bring a sales sheet detailing the costs of purchasing the vehicle, but instead brought a sales sheet for a different, more expensive vehicle of the same model. When I noticed this, Frankie claimed that he hadn't had time to print the information for the correct vehicle, even though he'd arrived at our appointment ten minutes early. 3. I asked Frankie how long the vehicle had been on the lot. He said that it had been 2 weeks and waxed on about how their vehicles sell very quickly. Later, I read the vehicle history report, which stated that the car had actually been on the lot for 7 weeks. When I pointed this out, he claimed it was difficult to keep track of the cars on the lot. 4. On 9/4, I learned that McGrath charges $891 for the Hyundai certified processing fee. Another Hyundai dealership in the area charges $600 for this fee, and I mentioned this to Frankie. He said that he'd be willing to match the lower fee to make a sale. On 9/7, I told him that I was ready to purchase the vehicle and asked him to match the $600 fee. He feigned uncertainty and launched into a pitch about the benefits of purchasing a certified pre-owned vehicle, "which might only be available with the $891 fee." I repeated, "As we discussed, I know the other dealership only charges $600 for certification." He abruptly cut the act, made a show of calling a manager, and quickly confirmed that they would lower the certification processing fee to $600. 5. We agreed to finalize the sale the next day with home delivery. I asked Frankie to email two documents: the vehicle history report and the sales sheet. He texted a link to the vehicle history report and did not send the sales sheet. When I asked him again to email me the sales sheet, he sent it by text. 6. The sales sheet Frankie sent listed the certification fee as $691, not $600 as we had agreed. When I pointed this out, he claimed it was a misunderstanding, but never sent me a corrected sales sheet. 7. Frankie sent me a link to a finance application. When I told him that I didn't need financing because I would be paying in cash, he said, "We still need to run credit just to verify identity." - I asked how running my credit would verify my identity. - He did not answer my question, instead saying, "Its just something we have to do with all customers as a dealership. We need to verify the credit history of the customers we're selling too that's all." - I responded, "I don't see why my credit history is relevant if I'm buying in cash." - He texted back: "I understand why you think that it's just something that we need to do in order to sell the car. If you were buying the car from a private party obviously you wouldn't need to but at a dealership we need to run credit." **PSA: This is patently false.** If a dealer claims they need to run your credit even though you'll be paying in cash or have prearranged financing with a lender, they are lying. Sometimes they'll even cite the Patriot Act. Don't fall for this. The next day, Frankie reached out to imply that a manager had misled him about the finance application and said, "I’m still new to the business so I just go off what I’m told." He suggested that he had gone above and beyond by facilitating the at-home test drive and agreeing to home delivery (again, services provided by most dealerships at the moment) and concluded, "so do you still want to do it or no?" No, Frankie. I do not. More
