I located a used 2018 Porsche Macan Turbo online at Luther Brookdale Toyota listed for $59,995. Their website offered me an option to purchase the vehicle utilizing their much-publicized ‘SmartPath’ vi Luther Brookdale Toyota listed for $59,995. Their website offered me an option to purchase the vehicle utilizing their much-publicized ‘SmartPath’ virtual purchase process. Thus, in good faith I completed the online purchase. As directed by the ‘SmartPath’ process, I called the dealer to finalize the details of the purchase. At that Time the Sales Manager, Tony Arens informed me that they had the wrong price ($59,999) online and the correct price was $62,999. His stated reason for the discrepancy was that “they intended to change the price ”but it was not done.” He also made a statement that I should have known the price was lower than the market price. Aside from being ridiculous that a customer should know their price, his assertion was wrong – my research on the same model & options showed prices from $57k to $64K. If fact, as I write this, that is the still the case. The price of $59,995 was clearly listed on their web site and multiple car sales sites for a minimum of 4 days (when I started shopping for this model) prior to the price-switching on our phone conversation. Even if the SmartPath purchase required a final review, it should not include a price increase from the documented advertised price. Especially as their process clearly states (everywhere) that, “the advertised price will be the price you pay.” I asked the Sales Manager, Tony Arens if he would arrange a call with the GM so that I could ask if they were willing to honor the advertised price that was switched to a higher price at the ‘last minute’ and after my completion of the SmartPath purchase. I know that their leadership was under no legal obligations. However, I trusted that they would not condone price-switching and risk a bad reputation. He did not get back to me. Absolutely, no effort to follow-up or work with me. This is the type of unethical practices that negatively impacts the entire industry, including the many outstanding dealers that I have worked with. This behavior is driving the market quicker to end-to-end online purchasing dealers like Carvana, CarMax, Vroom, etc. (this dealer advertised online purchase capability but obviously they did not have anything close to that). As a career Customer Service professional, I was extremely disappointed by the attitude and response by the Sales Manager, Tony Arens. He stated that my only recourse (other than paying an additional $3K) was to shop somewhere else. Never in my career have I made that statement to a customer. My approach has always been to resolve issues so that both parties can maintain a long-term relationship. My only expectation was for ethical sales practices and a respectful customer experience. I was afforded neither. Our car buying experience was not just what you would expect but what you would hope for. Our salesman, Jeff, really knew his products inside and out and you could tell he was a real "car guy" himself. expect but what you would hope for.
