We received a fair price on our trade in and were able to come to a deal quickly. Because I had been shopping for a while, there wasn't really a protracted decision-making process. I knew I was going to place an order for the car I wanted, and I came in with the best price I had found. John was very personable, and offered to match the deal, but apparently, there wasn't much wiggle room. He noted the service and proximity to where I live, which swayed me a bit. What also impressed me, is that Shuman gave me the best offer on my trade-in. $500 more than the best offer I had received, and $3,500 (yes, three thousand, five hundred) more than Dick Scott had offered earlier that same day. Although I decided to sell the car privately, it definitely made me feel like they weren't trying to pull one over on me. The day I went to pick up my car, John greeted me instantly, was incredibly nice to my family, and seriously knew the car inside and out as he was going through a run-down of how to do different things -- so by no means should this review be taken as any sort of indictment against him. However, I have to say that the rest of the dealership experience was mediocre. For instance, before I had signed a purchase agreement, I said I was bringing my own financing. In the days leading up to delivery, I said I had a check from my credit union. Yet, Shuman still does the "Go talk to the finance guy so he can try and sell you a warranty" routine. (In fairness, the finance guy wasn't overly aggressive about it, but it was still one of those "Really?" type of moments.) After handing over my check, I was kind of left in limbo for the next twenty minutes. Admittedly, I liked being left alone at a desk more than the weird "Let's go tour the Service Department!" routine that every other dealership has done, but after a while, I almost expected someone to come and ask me if I needed more time to reconsider the warranty packages I had refused. Finally, we made it to my car. You'd think that buying on the upper-end of Dodge's flagship would at least net a full tank of gas. At least, you'd probably think that if you had ever bought a new or used car from any dealership anywhere at any point in history. Apparently, not here -- making it all the more insulting after seeing "additional fuel" as a line item. I even asked about it. "...it's just half a tank now." Really? I mean, I get that no sane person is going to say "What? No full tank? Forget it! Keep my deposit, because I'm going to another dealer to order this car!" But by the same token, on a car that's rated at 15 mpg (city), I should at least get a day to enjoy it without looking for a gas station. Following a week of removing excess wax, I decided it was time to spend a couple hundred dollars on accessories. I had the small list of part numbers I wanted, and noted the prices other Dodge dealers sell them for on eBay. Because my preference is to spend locally whenever practical, I contacted the Parts Department online, explained that I had just bought a new car there, and offered to buy the parts from Shuman if the price was close to what I had found. Even there, nobody wanted to throw me a bone. The "next-day" prices to a new customer were all at least 40% more than what a dealership in Chicago was selling them for to anybody on eBay -- and Ground shipping from Chicago is basically next-day to Metro Detroit (keeping in mind, too, that I never asked for "next-day" availability). Adjusting for taxes, shipping, etc., it was still $219 to anybody off the street at a Chicago dealership, or $307 from the dealership that just sold me a brand new car the previous week. I don't claim to understand the nuances of one dealership's margins over another's. But coming back to an American brand after years of buying Japanese brands, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in the dealership experience. I thought the underlying deal was fine, the trade-in offer was generous, and I never felt as though anybody I had come in to contact with was less than friendly or professional. But, I think many of the reviews here had raised my expectations to something above average. More
