We have always admired the staff without exception. I say this at a time when my wife and I are disputing a decision of Toyota headquarters to charge us for $2496.87 to replace an original faulty exhaust pipe system the failure of which could have caused us to run off the road at high speed on an interstate highway system. Koon’s Predatory Ethos Be warned, at Koons you are not a customer, you are a mark. The Koon’s Tyson’s Toyota salesmen must have smiled at my arrival in the showroom, an elderly Vietnam vet might make a a customer, you are a mark. The Koon’s Tyson’s Toyota salesmen must have smiled at my arrival in the showroom, an elderly Vietnam vet might make an easy mark for their predatory impulses. It began well enough. I was offered a 3-year lease on a new Corolla for $425/month by the salesman who, after details of the agreement had been discussed, arranged for me to take it on a test drive. I loved the vehicle, and I said I would take the offer. I thought I had the $425/month price for the transaction, but I did not. The financial man in the back room was working up the agreement. The bait and switch was in progress. Everyone was happy, me, the salesman, Adil Zaman, his negotiator, Muhammad Khan, and the finance guy in the back room. When I went into the back room, to my surprise, the $425 lease payment had increased to $680! While this is a small amount for a month, when multiplied by 36 payments, it equals a $9180 overpayment for the car! Something I did not realize at the time. I could have bought the car outright for that amount. I’m sure the sales team was high-fiving each other in glee after I left. This also made me question their maintenance operation I had used for several years. It seemed every time my previous car had routine service, my service rep would warn there were two, almost always two, additional problems to be dealt with, now or soon. For instance, the water pump had a seep from a seam, or the automatic transmission fluid’s color warned it should be replaced. I could have no idea if any of this is true. Judging by the predatory behavior of the sales force, I would not trust that many of the cited problems were valid, but I will never know. This predatory ethos seems embedded throughout the organization. If one area of the operation is freely and brazenly predatory, all of their operations probably are too. However, it seems not even their low customer rating on Yelp has convinced them to check their ethics and clean up their act. Be warned, at Koons you are not a customer, you are a mark. More
