I’m happy with the Toyota TRD Tacoma Sport I purchased at Kenny Kent Toyota on December 30, 2020, dissatisfied with my treatment by the sales and service departments at the dealership. I arrived at Kenny Ke Kenny Kent Toyota on December 30, 2020, dissatisfied with my treatment by the sales and service departments at the dealership. I arrived at Kenny Kent Toyota on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at 4:30 just before dark. It was raining steadily. I test-drove a 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport that I saw sitting on the lot in hopes of trading in my 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 with 43,000 miles that I purchased new on Feb 14, 2015. When I parked the Tacoma, I asked for a rag to check the engine oil. The advertisement said it was Toyota Certified but I wanted to check the oil for cleanliness and smell. The oil was a light shade of brown and I could see the marks on the stick. It wasn’t dirty but it wasn’t clean either. It had a slight burnt smell, but I was satisfied that the engine hadn’t been abused. I made a deal and transferred my belongings from the Colorado to the Tacoma. The salesman asked if he could take the Tacoma around back to have it cleaned up. I looked at him funny. I had test-driven the Tacoma to Newburgh and back in a steady rain. The vehicle was already detailed. Water was beading up on the paint and rolling off to the ground. The interior was spotless and had the new car smell. I shrugged and said OK, I guess. The truck disappeared for less than 10 minutes and was brought up front for me to transfer my belongings from the Colorado. I had a forty-gallon trash bag that I opened and began transferring my stuff. The salesman went inside. About five minutes later, the salesman came back outside and started to help me transfer my belongings. I had practically filled the trash bag. I was at the right rear door of the Colorado when I looked up at the rear-view mirror and noticed the sterling silver cross and chain that always hung from my vehicle mirror for over 30 years was missing. I asked the salesman what had happened to it. He said he took it off and laid it in the back seat of the Tacoma. I went over to the Tacoma and couldn’t find it. I said I would look for it when I got home. I have searched the truck high and low several times and the cross I carried in my vehicles for more than thirty years has never been found. I was taken to the loan originator’s office to complete the deal. I told him I didn’t want any frills, bells and whistles added to my truck. No service plan, no theft insurance, no body sealant/protectant, etc. I told him if somebody stole the truck, I didn’t want it back. I signed the paperwork hastily and took the truck home. I couldn’t drive the truck off the lot. It was dark and raining and I was unfamiliar with the controls. I left the truck running and went in to get the salesman. I told him my plight; I couldn’t turn on the lights. The Tacoma was the first vehicle I owned that had the light switch on the end of the turn signal lever. The light switch on the Colorado and all the vehicles I owned was on the dash. The salesman came out and hastily showed me where the switch was but never showed me what the 3 positions were for. It was an interesting trip home as I fiddled with the switch. I didn’t know until the next morning that I left the truck in reverse overnight because I was unaware of the shift gate offset. The next day, December 31, 2020, Thursday, New Year’s Eve At 8:00 AM, I reviewed the Tacoma paperwork. Much to my chagrin, I found a $2800.00 Service contract and a $199.00 theft insurance contract. I called the loan originator at 8:42AM. I was not kind. I railed at him for 11 minutes reiterating that I had told him the night before during the contract writeup that I was not interested in adding a service contract or etched glass theft protection. I had made a big mistake trusting him. I reminded him that the Toyota extended warranty would cover major repairs and I would do the minor repairs as I have done on the 39 vehicles I have owned the last 50 years. I told him again that if the vehicle was stolen from me, I didn’t want it back. I made arrangements to return to the dealership later that morning and have the contract rewritten. I still wanted the truck. This is an inconvenience that would have been avoided if the dealership had taken “no” for an answer instead of forcing their exorbitant contracts on me when I adamantly stated I was not interested. The loan originator stated that the salesman and the used car manager told him that I approved the service contract and the theft contract. I never discussed either contract with anybody except the loan originator. It dawned on me that on the night of purchase, the salesman took the truck around back to etch the glass and had nothing to do with detailing. He rewrote the contract. I was offered the service contract at half price which I angrily refused. He ran a second credit check that cost me four points in my credit rating but was not a big deal since my rating is above 800 points. The second credit check shows how much the dealership trusted me. Later that afternoon I reviewed my paperwork and lo and behold, the etched-glass theft protection was still in it. My bad, I trusted a dealer that had just proven they could not be trusted. I decided I would absorb the charge. Jan 2021 When I started the truck New Year’s Day, I noticed the service sticker on the upper left corner of the windshield. The next service date was 11/27/20 and the mileage was 15,043. I logged into the Toyota web site and the last service performed was listed as 6/2020and the mileage was listed as 11,753. The Carfax service history states that the vehicle was serviced on 11/23/20 at 15,043 miles. Now I was concerned if the services had actually been performed. On January 18, I noticed that the right wiper insert had a tear in it. The bad insert should have been corrected during the dealer service and Inspection Certification process. I went to Kenny Kent Toyota to purchase wiper blade inserts on Jan 20, 2021. I first went in to see the salesman who was standing in the showroom. I asked him if it wasn’t customary to contact the purchaser and ask how it was going with the purchase? He replied that he had called me. “No, you didn’t”, I snapped. Luckily for him, he didn’t respond as I had my phone bill in my back pocket which showed no incoming calls from him. I told him I was pleased with the vehicle but not with the sale. I walked over to the parts department following the directions the salesman had given me. The parts man informed me that their computer was down so he couldn’t help me. He saw another parts man walking by and asked if he knew the parts numbers. He Did! Kudos to the parts man. After paying for the wiper inserts, I went to the service desk and explained the discrepancy in the service records and that I was worried that the oil change and certification hadn’t been performed. Without looking up, he said that Toyota was slow updating their records and that they would update shortly. He also stated that he couldn’t update the records himself. I asked if he was sure about it, He replied ‘Yes.” He didn’t check anything. All I got was a verbal assurance from someone who didn’t seem to care. It is May and the oil change has never appeared on the Toyota web site. March 2021 In early March, the “Maintenance Required Soon” warning started to be displayed momentarily on vehicle startup. I took a picture of the light on the dash March 08, 2021 with the mileage reading 16425. NOW, I honestly believe the service had never been performed. I decided to service the truck myself as I had no confidence in Kenny Kent Toyota and that is my usual practice, especially the first time with a new vehicle. I had joined the Tacoma World website to gain knowledge about my truck. Using their discussion on oil filter housings, I decided to replace the plastic housing with a Toyota aluminum housing that is installed on the Lexus. I used a Toyota oil filter and approved engine oil. When I tried to remove the stock oil filter, I became furious. It wouldn’t budge with standard length wrenches. Using a torque wrench, I couldn’t loosen it when applying a force of 140 Ft/Lbs. For a minute, I entertained the idea of taking the truck to the dealership and demanding they remove it at no charge. Then I came to my senses, realizing that I didn’t want them touching my vehicle. I used my longest breaker bar and removed the housing. Remarkably, the plastic housing didn’t break. I logged into the Toyota Service website and entered an oil change record myself. Sounds like a bad dream or fairy tale? I have complete documentation, pictures, contracts, etc. to bolster my complaints, incredulity, and dissatisfaction with Kenny Kent Toyota. Furthermore, I hand delivered a longer version of this document with some of the supporting documentation, my phone number and address, in a manilla envelope to Butch Hancock, General manager, marked confidential on May 20, 2021, around 10:00AM for comment. The receptionist told me he wasn’t in yet, but she would see that he got the envelope. Mr. Hancock has never responded in the two weeks since I delivered the envelope. At this time, I could care less what anyone at this dealership has to say. They shouldn’t even think about selling me another vehicle. More
