On March 31, 2024 we started our used car search after our 2008 Rogue got a terminal diagnosis. We went to Johnson City Mazda first and it was not a great experience. So, we crossed the road and went to our 2008 Rogue got a terminal diagnosis. We went to Johnson City Mazda first and it was not a great experience. So, we crossed the road and went to Johnson City Honda. It had 4.5 out of 5 stars on Google and 4.9 out of 5 stars on DealerRater.com. What could go wrong? We met Jose’ and checked out a used 2020 HR-V. We really liked it. Jose’ was great as was his sales manager, Mike. We couldn’t come to an agreement and they were straightforward about it all. No problem. We understood. We left the dealership having exchanged contact information and them saying they’d be in contact. I asked them not to contact us unless they had a car for us to look at. The dealership honored that request. I kept looking for vehicles, but was so impressed with our initial treatment that I was pretty set on buying from Johnson City Honda. On Monday, April 8, I saw a 2014 CR-V on their web site with 48k on it. We hadn’t tried a CR-V, but I was interested so we ran over there. Jose’ was out so we saw his sales colleague, Traven. Traven was very helpful, and we were pretty pleased. We really liked this car, too, and the price was more in line with what we were looking at. Traven allowed me to take the car to my mechanic because while it needed to be detailed, the required maintenance had already been completed. My mechanic put it up on his lift and was alarmed when there was a long “slick” of transmission fluid down the undercarriage. He told me not to buy the vehicle unless this was taken care of (plus there was significant rust on a couple of spots and in his opinion the rotors had been turned pretty crudely). I went back to the dealership and let Traven know about the leak and other items. He was visibly shocked and went to talk with his sales manager that day, Ken. He came back with an answer from Ken. We needed to take the car “as is” with the leak because they had already put too much money in it. I was incredulous and got pretty bothered. Traven went the extra mile and talked to his service manager, Carlos, who said the leak would be covered under warranty. xxxxxxto Carlos. Thumbs down to Ken. On Tuesday, April 9, the leak was taken care of and the car was detailed. Traven and Carlos communicated regularly and all was ok. Today, April 10, I went back to Johnson City Honda to get the car for my mechanic to confirm the transmission issue had actually been addressed. In the meantime, Jose’ checked with the service manager, Carlos as to what the actual problem had been. Come to find out that it was just transmission fluid from when they had serviced the transmission, but had never cleaned off the underside of the car…sloppy; shoddy. My mechanic confirmed this. OK, things happen. I then started to leave my mechanic’s shop when I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw a paint scrape just under the window of the left passenger door. That scrape wasn’t there on Monday, but it was today. I asked my mechanic to look at the ¾” by 10” scrape, and he said it looked like the detail guy had gotten too enthusiastic with the pressure washer. He said the paint would peel back from that damage and the door would need to be replaced at a cost of maybe $1,000. I took the car back to Johnson City Honda and pointed out the issue to Jose’. He agreed that the detail guy had indeed screwed up, but I’m doubtful he would have said anything about it if I hadn’t brought it up (buyer beware, I guess). He went to his sales manager Mike (the good one, not Ken). Unfortunately for us, Mike’s answer about the scrape was the same as Ken’s about the transmission fluid. If you want the car, you have to take it “as is”. I couldn’t believe it. Johnson City Honda damaged the car between the time we made our initial deal and when I went back to get it checked by my mechanic again, and we were told we needed to buy it “as is”. BAD. BEWARE.
