Fix car mechanic issue. I had to leave the car, they contacted Lyft service to take me back home. They were flexible and offer a good discount for the service rendered. This was my first purchase of a used car. I figured with rates/prices where they were at, I’d try save a few bucks. I went to a big dealer thinking it would be a safe bet to get a used car that would at least be safe/functional with the basics. I understand things start to fail as a car ages, but the basics (tires, brakes and the like) should be good to go at a large-scale dealer, right? I’ve learned A LOT from my experience at Jim Tidwell Ford. 1. That statement is absolutely not true. 2. If I have the means, I’ll never buy used again. 3. ALWAYS get an outside inspection. The sales process was fine. The guy I worked with didn’t pressure me, was friendly and carried the negotiations to/from the manager effectively. My overnight ‘test drive’ showed that the car seemed to drive fine. I did some ‘testing’ of things by pressing the buttons, driving and stopping, etc. The alignment seemed OK, I mean the steering wheel was straight. The wheels looked OK, and by that I mean I turned the front wheels all the way right and left to make sure there was even wear. I looked at the back wheels but couldn’t see past the first couple inches on the outside – but they looked “new enough” to be free of major issues. That is about as far as my ‘expertise’ goes. (which is again why I thought a big dealer would be the safer bet on a used car – silly me – should have taken it to a mechanic – Those inspection stickers and inspection reports the dealers have are just for show) The only thing that stood out to us for the 12 overnight hours we had it was the A/C and vented seats. They seemed to be not functioning quite right so I brought it up to the dealer and he explained it away. Something to the effect that it was middle of winter and we were flipping between heat and A/C so the air wasn’t able to blow effectively. Fine. It sounded good and I let it go and went ahead with the purchase. We traded in our car for this 2020 Explorer. This was late-December. The first red flag that this is a crap dealer was a call we received shortly after completing the sale. A couple weeks after, we received a call from the NEW owners of our old car wanting to know about a sound the car was making! I guess I accidentally left come service papers with our contact information on it and the dealer didn’t clean it out. Shortly after that we started hearing this grinding noise with our car and because the weather started warming we learned the A/C didn’t in fact, work properly. I tried to make appointments with dealerships but they were all booked out 2+ weeks. Took the car to a recommended mechanic and learned that the brake pads and rotors were rusted to xxxx. Also learned that the wheel joint was leaking oil and the two rear tires were worn down so badly on the inside from a poor alignment that the metal/fibers were exposed. They gave me pictures of everything. Glad my family didn’t die a fiery death from a blowout. Jim Tidwell should be ashamed. They couldn’t diagnose the A/C so I had it evaluated by someone else and it is a very expensive motor that is broken. And of course, the car is just out of warranty. Of all the issues it is very very clear that either the dealer didn’t perform any kind of inspection or moved things around in hopes the new buyers wouldn’t notice until it was too late. Either scenario just contributes to the reputation every car sales place has. Car dealers already have such a low bar set, it baffles me how they can’t even reach that. I hope the few bucks they made on me was worth it. Before leaving with my newly purchased car, I was already talking about trading in my other vehicle for a truck there – because the sales process wasn’t terrible. The last dealer that I could stomach had my business for about 12 years and made a lot of money on me because I turn over cars every 2-3 years. After I had the serious safety issues fixed, I was able to trade that xxx in for a new vehicle and ended up not losing a ton of money on it. I couldn’t get More
