Happy Purchase of 2018 Odyssey We came in expecting to purchase a Pilot for our rather large family and we left with an Odyssey that exceeded our expectations. Our salesperson, Ravi We came in expecting to purchase a Pilot for our rather large family and we left with an Odyssey that exceeded our expectations. Terrible experience, misled and walked out after signing I really think our experience at Jim Coleman is why car dealerships have such a terrible reputation. At first it was pleasant, our sales person John M I really think our experience at Jim Coleman is why car dealerships have such a terrible reputation. At first it was pleasant, our sales person John Mullins was kind and said all the right things, "we won't lose your business over price", "we have to be #1 in sales so we will do whatever it takes to earn your business", and the classic, "I guarantee if you leave here you cannot get a better price anywhere else". Lies. Our story starts with wanting a Honda Odyssey EX-L. On the drive over we get a call - the EX-L's they had yesterday are sold, do we want to look at an EX in which we can add leather? Leather is the only thing we wanted in the EX-L package. We asked, will it look the same as the EX-L? Will it affect safety or the warranty? Answer: it will look the same and does not affect safety or warranty. OK, we'll come look. We've added leather to a car in the past so this seemed reasonable to us. Fast forward six hours of negotiating price, we have signed the title of our trade-in, filled out the financing paperwork (my credit score is above 850 so this was not going to be an issue), and now we're being put through the 4-inch binder sales pitch for rust protection, windshield protection, and good lord please stop pushing this so hard...LoJack. During the first minutes of this sales pitch we are asked what colors we want on our $400 add-on leather wrapped steering wheel (part of the EX-L's leather that I really wanted). I explained we already talked to John, our sales rep, about what we wanted and we want it just to be exactly like the EX-L's smooth-as-butter steering wheel - we don't want any other colors just because we have the liberty of doing so since it's an add-on. Here comes the fun part, as we are being pitched LowJack for 20 minutes (which we were very clear we didn't want), we are being shown text message pictures from the leather vendor of what the leather-wrapped steering wheel is going to look like. It is a two-color piece of trash (John, our sales reps words after he finally saw pictures of what he had been assuring us was going to look "just like the EX-L's steering wheel") that looks like someone who worked on Coraline or Nightmare Before Christmas stitched it together. Now the sale is in jeopardy and they start to panic. Everyone disappears, leaving us to watch the clock tick by knowing we have to leave by 5:40 pm (we arrived at noon) to pick-up our child from daycare before they close at 6:00. We try to check on where the heck they went, and we're told they're working on it. John comes out and says, "How about the regular steering wheel and save yourself a few hundred dollars?" - That was it. I had it. I was clear from the beginning, from the drive-over before we even got to the store, that I would look at an EX if the interior leather seats and steering wheel could match the EX-L. Now the staff got defensive, saying they told us the steering wheel was "not recommended" and "not worth it". Those are subjective terms and a matter of opinion. Sure, to some people getting the EX-L's steering wheel probably isn't worth $400, but to me, it was. An objective statement would have been to be honest up front and say that it is not going to look the same. Instead of lying and saying that it would look exactly like the EX-L. In the end, we walked out - tired, frustrated, misled, and certainly disrespected at the end. We asked to speak to a manager and before my husband could even finish his thoughts the manager stuck out his hand to shake it and interrupted saying, "Well it looks like there's nothing we can do to earn your business." It was such a terrible experience it makes my skin crawl. We grabbed our stuff out of "our" now washed and gassed up new Odyssey (in which we had already installed our carseat because hey, we'd already signed and practically bought the car!) and we left feeling distraught and with a distaste for Honda in general. On the drive home we decided to call another dealership that was in the USAA Auto Circle, Ourisman in Laurel. I can't recommend this dealership enough. We gave a one-minute version of our situation to Earl, the Director of Sales at Ourisman, and he was able to secure an EX-L in our color preferences from another dealership and give us an EVEN BETTER PRICE on the EX-L than Jim Coleman gave us on the EX with leather...all over the phone in 15 minutes. When we showed up the next day the deal was as discussed, and the car was sent over from the other dealership while we completed the paperwork. A painless and pleasant few hours later and we drove off in the exact car we had originally wanted, at a price tag out the door that was...get this...$2500 cheaper than Jim Coleman's price on the lesser model. Thank goodness for Ourisman giving us our happy ending and providing us the Odyssey of our dreams. More
