Since 1952, J.H. Barkau & Sons has served the Northern Illinois, Southern Wisconsin stateline area for their automotive needs. We can proudly boast to over 70,000 customers in those years and have had thousands of customers purchase multiple vehicles and generations of families that have allowed us to serve them.
When John H. Barkau founded the business, his goal was to bring quality, affordable transportation to the local area. Jim (2nd generation), Rick (3rd generation), and Willie (3rd generation) Barkau have continued in that tradition while expanding our marketplace to be worldwide. We have had vehicles shipped to Russia, Sweden, Australia, Turkey, Mexico and many other locations. We have vehicles purchased by customers in 49 states and commonly have customers fly in to pick up their new vehicles. In all of this, it has been a pleasure for the Barkau family to help fulfill the transportation needs of a varied clientele.
J.H. Barkau & Sons has accomplished this feat by continuing to offer quality, hand-picked vehicles at very competitive prices. We believe in offering our customers an incredible selection that is second to none, with over 1100 vehicles available for purchase. We believe in a no pressure sales environment and in quality reconditioning of our inventory selection. Our sales teams at our Cedarville and Freeport stores each have over a century of experience in helping fill the needs of our vast customer base. The funny part is, we remember a lot of you years later and we are genuinely happy to see you.
But selling cars is not all that we do. We believe in supporting the local community through donations, Toy Drives, Food Drives and many other local charities and fundraisers. We also run the “Excellerate” program for Aquin Catholic Schools and have facilitated over 113 donated vehicles. Korey was fantastic, he was well versed with vehicle that we were there to see. Extremely professional and friendly staff across the board. I will say they have cats which is a bit weird, I almost tripped over the cat food on the way out. However my experience was soo amazing that by the end, the cats were just some extra fun! This small town dealership has a nice selection of clean vehicles that are worth the trip. The staff was friendly, professional, honest and put forth the effort to get you what you ask for. Our salesman Tim was the best person we dealt with on this particular hunt for a car. He was attentive to our requests. When we made an appoinyment to drive the car, the car was waiting for us, running with the snow and ice cleaned off. He asked my wife and daughter for their opinions, listened to their input, and remembered their names and desires on follow-up visits. When we decided to buy, he followed up on promises before we picked up the car, and even 2 weeks later for a replacement part. I will look him up on my next car for sure. Thanks Tim! More

It was his first wire transfer for funds and he handled it with ease and the questions he had for the situation someone was right around the corner to make sure things went smoothly. When I went to pick up my truck they were surprised I arrived so early (I was just excited) and asked if I could wait a moment because…they clean it and fill the tank!! That was a relief because I’ve just moved to the area and don’t know where all the gas stations are just yet. The whole process was excellent and I recommend anyone to go there if you’re looking for a new vehicle. More
