“We recently brought our 2013 Hyundai Elantra to be serviced at Hyundai of Abington. We brought the car in due to a check engine light on the dashboard, which stated the car required immediate service. The car manual told us to immediately drive your vehicle to the nearest dealer for emergency service. Given the potential severity of the issue, I opted for Hyundai of Abington to service the car rather than my local garage. To my surprise, my son's car only needed new spark plugs and a coil for under fifty bucks at a local Auto parts store. In addition, we were billed for two hours on the diagnostic computer. This seemed excessive to us, as you would expect diagnostic codes showing what's wrong with your car to be displayed within five minutes on the shop's computer after hookup. However, it took a total of two hours and nearly $900 to address these minor issues. The real shock came when I was told the car needed new rotors and brake pads, totaling another $900. As a middle-class family with three children, this was an unexpected and unreasonable cost after accepting the $900 cost of four spark plugs, a coil, and two hours in the diagnostic computer. I declined the brake services and took the car to my trusted local garage, JP Automotive, in Hatboto, Pa. To my disbelief, JP informed me that there was nothing wrong with the brakes and the rotors, and they were not even on the edge of needing to be replaced. This left me questioning the motives of Hyundai of Abington; was the service tech trying to upsell unnecessary services to boost their paycheck? I cannot say for sure whether this is a broader problem at the Hyundai dealer in Abington, but it is a huge red flag, and my wife and I almost blew a gasket based on the fact that we could have said yes to the dealer with doing the unneeded brake work. Of course, the dealer will say we disagree with your garage. We are the dealer, and we know when you need new brakes and rotors, but folks!! How would this make you all feel?? On a positive note, the customer service representatives at Hyundai of Abington were exceptional. I do not believe they were involved in this situation in any way. My wife and I are considering contacting the action news tip line to bring attention to this issue. I urge others who have had similar experiences to speak up and take action. We should not have to pay for unnecessary services on our vehicles or be taken advantage of by car dealerships. Thank you for listening." More
