The Hopkins Ford team was professional, supportive, transparent, inclusive and exemplified the highest level of customer service I’ve seen in a long time. From the moment I met the sales team through driving off the lot the level of service was exemplary. Do NOT buy from here, they lie: Classic bait and switch. Attempting to purchase WITH CASH we found out that the sale price is actually at least $2400 more than advertised (and I’m not talking taxes, title a Attempting to purchase WITH CASH we found out that the sale price is actually at least $2400 more than advertised (and I’m not talking taxes, title and fees). Our experience was the same as another reviewer who was trying to purchase with cash 3 weeks ago…we went with a set budget, buying with cash, which we told both Austin and Angel up-front. We spent two hours there test-driving and learning about the features of the 2022 Blue Mustang Mach-E GT. Things seemed fine up to the point we said we wanted to buy. We agreed on a price, and Angel came out and presented us with a sheet of paper, telling us “I have to do this with everyone.“ Angel then showed us the paper with the price breakdown and, in retrospect, I should’ve figured something was fishy when he hadn’t written down the “out the door“ final number. I just didn’t think anything of it, because it never occurred to me that these people would be attempting something so deceitful. So after he showed us the sheet with a breakdown of the MSRP, the price we were getting, the optional accessories, tax title, and a couple of other fees, we told Angel we didn’t want the “Accessories” and so Angel crossed out the accessory costs at the bottom because we didn’t want those, and we initialed the paper near the cost of the car that we had negotiated (he added “+++” after the number for tax, title and fees). The “optional accessories” included: $2400-ish for “EV certification“ which was just another name for their extended warranty; $1795 for interior and exterior protection (if they mention interior “hydrophobic protection“ that’s it); and $595 for some kind of additional theft protection that in case the car was stolen, we would get $5000 back on top of what our insurance would pay. After he took our initialed “price disclosure“ back to his manager, he came back and asked if we wanted to finance it, to which we told him no. At that point, he tried to convince us by saying if we were to finance it, “It’s a simple interest loan so you could pay 90% off it off in the first week and then pay the remaining 10% off in the first six months.“ I asked him if there was a prepayment penalty and he replied “No, it’s just that if you pay it off in less than six months we lose the money we make on the loan“. At the time I thought it was a good sign of their integrity, but in retrospect, I wonder if he just didn’t know he wasn’t supposed to tell us that. He went back to his manager, came back once again, and asked us if we wanted to have our car serviced there, which we told him no because it’s a 45 minute drive one way. While we then waited for Angel to come back, Austin sat with us and asked for our insurance and began going through the process of getting the paperwork started. So we were confused and shocked when Austin got up and then a person we had never met before, Chris the general sales manager, sat down and informed us that the “optional” package both Austin and Angel told us about was now “mandatory“ and that there had been a “miscommunication“. He wouldn’t budge and just blamed us for not reading the fine print online. I’m sure if we had agreed to finance some or all of the car purchase those “accessories“ would have been truly optional for us. They claim to be transparent in their pricing and then pointed us to the fine print on their website. If you have to put something in fine print, and then blame the customer for not reading it, that is not “ transparent pricing“. I am reporting them to the State, their City and County as well as the BBB and any other agencies I can. Which is easier to believe: that they are lying to us; or that two of their sales people were so utterly incompetent that over the course of two hours, they accidentally presented a mandatory “accessory add-on” as optional to us? Hopkins Ford told us, when we asked for an out-the-door price, that they always put a “First Place Finish” on all their vehicles to protect them while in their lot from bird droppings and such. We went price, that they always put a “First Place Finish” on all their vehicles to protect them while in their lot from bird droppings and such. We went to Hopkins Ford in Elgin when we saw a vehicle we were interested in that was CLEARLY PRICED ONLINE for just over $42,000. However, when we asked how much it would be out-the-door, they tacked on $1795 for “Accessories” that they said was something that could not be taken off the price, even though I knew they could. If they truly could not take off the dealer added $1795, then they should have priced the vehicle at $42,000+$1795=$43,795 ONLINE in order to be in compliance with FTC automotive and commercial selling laws. Needless to say, we did not buy at this dealership, and found a better deal elsewhere a couple weeks later from a reputable dealership that does not play these types of games. To save future customers time, here is some information to help the customer INSIST that Hopkins Ford take off the price of accessories if they were not included in their advertised price online. Make sure to take pictures of the advertised price online before going to the dealership if you still desire to buy from them. There are laws against adding up-charges (against your will) that are over and above what the dealer has posted as the vehicle price online (except tax, and minimal title, plates, and doc fees). There was a recent FTC (Federal Trade Commission) lawsuit against another dealership in 2022 that came with rather stiff penalties for the same behavior I am describing from Hopkins Ford. I have also attached some pictures that hit the key points of advertising laws and regulations that Hopkins Ford violated and I hope this post helps vehicle buyers prepare to deny a tactic this dealership used to get potential customers to pay more than they need to. The dealer had my car for 6 weeks. Each time I called to see if it was ready they would say they found another problem. When I finally picked up my car on 5/27/23 it had an extra 1000 miles on it. The service manager claim he would look into it and tried to make a joke about it. Not only having the extra miles, but the area around the lift gate inside had what look like blue paint like someone had been moving something. The service manager Neil offered to detail my car, but I don't want to chance leaving my car with this dealer. More
