Our 2015 Chrysler Town and Country was making the infamous engine knocking noise from the lifters and rocker arms for a few months. I know I should have addressed it sooner. It turned into a cylinder 6 misfire P0306 code. I replaced spark plugs, swapped coils for cylinder 4 and 6. Still misfire code. One week later, the van started idling rough. We even heard a popping noise when pressing the accelerator to speed up. I tried replacing the injector to no avail. I decided to go to the dealership because they have the computers and tools to check for things like signal to the injectors, pressure in the cylinder and so forth. That was my thinking. I called to make appointment for a diagnostic and was told bring it any time. Drove it in on a Monday morning even though it was driving rough. They said “sorry you will have to come back tomorrow.” Ok, that’s the way it is sometimes. Came back the next day and dropped it off. I never heard from the repair shop, so I called at 3:00 pm. There was nobody available to take my call so I left a message with the receptionist. I decided at 4:30 to go by since I never heard from them and could not get through on a second call. No big deal. Got there and …..”Sorry sir, we could not get to it. Can you leave it or come back tomorrow?” I made arrangements to get home and back the next day. (Sigh) The next day I bring it in, tell them what I replaced and requested an injector check and cylinder pressure test to see if it’s a bad engine. They called in the afternoon to say I need a NEW engine! (Oh no!) “It will cost $6000 for a remanufactured motor and $4000 for labor. There are other things that will add another $2000. You may want to trade it in. We can get you in a new vehicle.” (What?! Did the mechanic check the cylinder pressure and injector?) All the manager had was the mechanics notes that said excessive engine noise, replace engine. (So he didn’t check anything, just listened to it!) “He’s a master mechanic. I have to go by what he says.” I’m paying $185 for the mechanic to listen for 10 minutes! WOW!! Don’t expect me to come back. I called an auto technician at Byron’s Auto Plus in Jonesboro, LA. He is trustworthy but it’s extra driving. He got me in, let me watch, and tested the injector and cylinder just as I asked. He told me the valves were stuck open because of the broken rocker arms. He got the parts and fixed it that day! I drove home that evening with no engine noise, no popping and no check engine codes. And charged less than $400 including parts. So in summary, I never had any repairs done by this dealership. Thank goodness!! And I never will! More
