They are selling wrecked cars and not disclosing it. I was in the market for a 2013 Toyota Prius three and contacted Hampton Toyota of Louisiana on or about September 7, 2015 and spoke with Tyler Santopi I was in the market for a 2013 Toyota Prius three and contacted Hampton Toyota of Louisiana on or about September 7, 2015 and spoke with Tyler Santopiertro. I specifically asked three questions: Is there anything wrong with the vehicle, has it been smoked in and could she verify it had the back up camera and navigation system which makes it a Prius three. She contacted me back and stated it had a clean car fax, the vehicle did not appear to be smoked in and had the navigation system. I agreed to fly out to Louisiana to purchase and pick up the vehicle at a purchase price of $15,900. Upon my arrival to Louisiana I was picked up at the airport and was given the opportunity to drive the vehicle back to the dealership. I noticed the car did not have the navigation system or back up camera. According to the website the vehicle sold was a Prius three and had navigation and a backup camera. Rudy offered $1000 off and we agreed with $1500 off which made the purchase price $14,500. He stated that they just pull the VIN number from Toyota and that is what came up in the system. I contacted Toyota directly and they verified that the car shows as a 2013 Prius Two. Upon driving on the interstate at a speed of 75 mph the front plastic trim became dislodged. I called Robie Choate and he agreed for me to bring the car back. He tried to have a technician come and look at it but couldn't get ahold of one. Finally a technician was found but at that point I had seen the rope holding the bumper to the frame. I told him the car had clearly been in a front end collision and there was no way they could have certified the vehicle and not seen the missing fender wells and missing bumper clips and the rope. I told him this was fraud as the vehicle model 3 vs 2 and navigation and back up camera was misrepresented but also the fact the car was in a collision and that was never disclosed. He stated it was not fraud and that they were not aware of any problems. They did agree to put me up at a hotel and reimburse my flight back. I told him they would need to reimburse my flight from El Paso to Lafayette as well. He said he would have to get permission for that. He instructed me to leave the car at the airport with the keys in it and they would get the car on Monday. Reimbursement for both flights was received from the dealership. After reviewing LA law on consumer protection I contacted Tyler and asked her to have Rudy contact me on Sunday, September 13, 2015. He called me and I told him I had reviewed LA law and talked with a friend who is an attorney in TX. I stated again that I believe the vehicle was damaged and they had to be aware of it since the vehicle was certified which means it went through a 160 point inspection including looking at the engine as well as the brakes, alignment and underbody. I offered as a solution purchasing a new 2015 Prius at a discounted price in exchange I would sign a document agreeing not to pursue legal action. I told him I understood they were closed today and that he would need to get approved by the owner. He told me since I hired an attorney the company policy is not to talk to me anymore. I explained I had not hired an attorney but rather talked to my friend who is an attorney. He stated again he couldn't talk to me and I said that was to bad as I was trying to come to a resolution as I felt I was knowingly sold a wrecked car as well as a car that was misrepresented and wanted to reach a resolution. He told me he couldn't sell a car on Sunday as it was against the law and hung up on me. My instinct told me not to leave the car at the airport in case it was damaged or stolen and to also file a police report. I contacted the Lafayette police department and Officer Smith of the Lafayette Police Department was dispatched along with a 2nd officer. Office Smith stated it was a civil matter not criminal but noted that it appeared front end damage occurred. This was determined based on the follows observations of the officers: on the passenger side where the hood is anchored to the vehicle the plastic is broken. The determination was that the hood was pushed back into the plastic causing it to break. Further the officer observed the hood would not open and had to pry it open while the other office pulled the hood release in the vehicle. The officer also noted the rubber along the front of the hood was pertruding out and not in alignment. Finally, in looking at the wheel well the officer noted the plastic trim was missing from the front and back side on the driver side. They also observed the rope holding the front bumper to the frame. From this they concluded the vehicle had front end damage due to a collision. They also advised that I not leave the vehicle at the airport as instructed by Rudy but rather leave it at the dealership and photograph it being dropped off there. I did drop it off at the dealership and took video of me dropping it off. I filed a complaint directly with Toyota and was told I would get a call back from the dealership within 48 hours. 72 hours later I had not received a call and called Toyota customer service again. They left a message for Hampton Toyota again but I didn’t receive a call back. I contacted them directly and asked for a returned copy of all documents from the sale of the vehicle. To date, those documents have not been returned. I additionally requested my Motorola Bluetooth device be returned to me. I was told that it could not be located. The customer service person I spoke with did offer to sell me a new 2015 Prius at the asking price listed on their website for my troubles. It didn’t really seem like an offer of resolution as I could have gotten that price if I walked into the dealership off the street. I guess on the positive side, it least it wouldn't have been wrecked. Too bad you can't give 0 stars. More
