Follow up: I receive a call from a Hamden Mazda rep. She says the owner asked her to call me. Here are the highlights of that call. She explained there was a miscommunication. She explained what I did wrong and what I should have said when I walked into the dealership. She said she understands both sides of the story. She explained how a lease works. She explained that small dealerships cannot offer as much as CarMax. She explained the manager meant that I owed more than just the lease amount plus the residual value. I also owed a registration fee and doc fees. She apologized. She stated two or three times that they did nothing “legally” wrong. She didn’t explain why Hamden Mazda collected lease payments of 13 months instead of the 12 months I owed. (She said there was probably confusion because of the current month’s lease payment. I asked if they checked with Mazda Finance. She didn’t answer.) She didn’t explain why my 4:00 appointment at the dealer was specifically made to terminate the lease *and* for me to buy the car per the Lease agreement. (She said the notes for the appointment didn’t state that. I said I even told the guy that when I met with him. She said it was a “miscommunication”. She said if this happened 2 or 3 years ago, we wouldn’t be having this conversation because used car values were not so high. I said OK, but it happened 2 days ago and used car values are high.) I told her I didn’t need an explanation of how a lease works or why CarMax can offer higher prices for used cars. I told her that has nothing to do with the issue. She didn’t explain why the manager said the residual value on the Lease agreement was only valid *at the end of the lease* when Mazda Finance said it was valid today. She didn’t explain why Mazda Finance did not charge me registration fee nor doc fees when I worked with them to end the lease, yet Hamden Mazda would have charged me for both. I told her she did not owe me an apology. But if the owner was truly sincere, he’d have the sales rep and the manager call me. I am even more convinced Hamden Mazda fraudulently tried to obtain my car.
