I booked a 7:00 a. m. oil change online for my 2014 Chevy Volt. We're new to San Antonio and looking for a regular shop, and I chose Gunn for its ratings even though it' m. oil change online for my 2014 Chevy Volt. We're new to San Antonio and looking for a regular shop, and I chose Gunn for its ratings even though it's a 30-minute drive. At check-in, I was told about an hour and a half, an hour and forty-five at most, so I waited. How the morning went: - About 90 minutes in, my car was still parked where I left it. I heard one employee tell another to take it next because they'd skipped it. - Around 9:50, I was called up to pay $28 for a tire rotation. The oil, the one thing I booked, had not been changed. The advisor called it a misunderstanding, said they were two technicians short that day, and said he would come get me as soon as it was done. - No one came. Around 11:00, I walked out and found the car finished and parked. The staff apologized and did not charge me for the oil change, which I appreciated. - Then the car would not start. I drove there that morning with no warnings; now the screen said "service battery" and "unable to charge." A technician read a low-voltage code, and I was told the code had been there when I arrived, from a scan that morning. When I asked to see the morning printout, I was told they had not actually scanned it that morning because they were too busy. - The 12-volt battery tested at 78 cold-cranking amps, which the technician said would not start a motorcycle. They had none in stock (about two hours to order, $289 plus $60 labor), so I took a "jump-start" as I just wanted to go home. Then came the conversation that settled it for me. Once the car was running, I put it in Hold mode to keep the gas engine on, worried that the weak 12-volt battery might keep the engine from starting partway home. The technician told me it wouldn't shut off because the alternator would keep it running, and that the gas engine runs alongside the electric motor to take load off and help economy. That is not how a Volt works. It drives on battery alone, with the gas engine off, until the battery runs low, and it has no conventional alternator. When I said so, I was told that's not how the car works. I've owned this car since 2014, and I bought it because of how it works. To be fair, I wasn't entirely right either. I told him the gas engine never drives the wheels, and on my generation of Volt that isn't quite true: at highway speeds it can add power to the wheels. My worry about the engine not starting mid-drive was likely off base too. But being partly wrong myself doesn't change what I heard. Listening to a technician confidently explain my car in ways I knew were flat-out wrong, at the end of a morning like that, gave me no reason to ever bring it back. I left just before noon, nearly five hours after my appointment, and was told the car wouldn't restart after I turned it off. The battery may well have been near the end of its life, and I'm not claiming the shop caused it. What I can't get past is sitting for hours with no one keeping me informed, the service I booked being missed, and being told about a morning scan that never happened. Everyone was polite, but politeness doesn't replace communication. If you drive a Volt, do more homework than I did and find a shop that has actually worked on one. If you drive a newer car or truck, this shop is probably fine, as long as they don't forget about you and your vehicle. More
