Obviously, it was a pleasure working with everyone. More

Got a bad deal from this dealer with no evidence of customer care DID I GET A BAD DEAL FROM PALM HYUNDAI? YOU BE THE JUDGE! We purchased a Hyundai Tucson Limited FWD with the ultimate package on Monday, December 26 DID I GET A BAD DEAL FROM PALM HYUNDAI? YOU BE THE JUDGE! We purchased a Hyundai Tucson Limited FWD with the ultimate package on Monday, December 26, 2016. We did not actually pick the car up until Wednesday, December 28. On 12/26, we negotiated the purchase price and trade-in value with salesman Richard Stewart and signed papers that day. The car that was being brought to the dealership did not have a trailer hitch which I wanted. The negotiations were complete when I noticed this. Keith Oliver, the Sales Manager, agreed to throw the hitch in for free. That evening I received an e-mail from Mr. Stewart inviting me to write a Facebook Review. The e-mail included the following statement: “If there is a reason not to give us a positive review please contact us at 941-639-1155 ext 7110, we would like to hear your concerns to improve our business.” Since the car we were purchasing was not at the dealership, there was no “STICKER” available to look at the prices. However, when I got home I went on the Hyundai website and priced the car as ordered. What follows are the MSRP prices along with dealer invoice prices (obtained from Consumer Reports). Item MSRP FACTORY INVOICE 2017 Tucson Limited FWD $29,775 $28,254 Ultimate Package 2,750 2,503 Carpeted Floor Mats 125 100 Cargo Net 50 41 Reversible Cargo Tray 100 80 Cargo Cover 190 153 Mud Guards 120 96 Rear Bumper Applique 70 57 Wheel Locks 55 44 Inland Freight & Handling 895 895 ______ ______ $34,130 $32,223 (FREE) Tow Hitch 350 316 ______ ______ $34,480 $32,539 That was a lot less than the $34,999 on the papers I signed. I first thought it might be a dealer add on, but then saw that we were being charged an additional $599 “Predelivery Service Charge” and a $17 “Electronic Registration Filling Fee” These other charges “. . . represent costs and profit (emphasis added) to the dealer for items such as inspecting, cleaning, and adjusting vehicles and preparing documents related to the sale.” Of course these additions also were subject to sales tax (an additional $43). Bottom line, I was charged $35,658 for a car with a list price of $34,480 (even if you include the cost of the FREE trailer hitch. That is $1178 above MSRP and $3,119 above what the dealership paid. One further thing, the car I traded in for $9,500 dollars is now on their lot with a price tag of $14,450. Whether it had been checked mechanically I cannot tell, but the cracked windshield and parking-lot dent on the passenger side rear door are still there. Thus, Palm Hyundai stands to make over $8,000 on this deal. When we went to pick up the car, I raised questions about this. When Mr. Oliver came over, I said that it looked like I had not gotten a good deal. His response was that I had gotten a good deal and he had even thrown in a FREE trailer hitch. He then walked away with no further discussion. The fact that I got a bad deal is on me. It is the role of Palm Hyundai’s employees to try to maximize the dealerships profits. The team at Palm Hyundai did their job well. However, dealerships also rely on satisfied customers to drive additional sales. They sure have one dissatisfied customer in me. Since all of the Palm dealerships have been sold by the Plattner Automtive Group to the Gettel Automotive Group Plattner may not care. I don’t know whether Gettel will care, but they will get a copy of this post. In negotiating this deal, I made many, many mistakes. I try to learn from my mistakes so I have thought long and hard about them. I cannot undo my mistakes, but I may be able to save others from making the same mistakes—either by avoiding this dealership or by driving a much better bargain if you buy from them. If you are interested in the lessons I learned e-mail me at <elc1946@mail.com>, I will be happy to send you guidelines so you don’t get screwed the same way. More
