Damaged car before leaving the lot I test drove a car and found no problems with the gear shift, except that the diagram was rotated 90 degrees on the gear shift knob. I asked them to rotate it before I drove away. 1/2 hour down the road, the base popped off. I took it to a dealer that I trust, and they reported "found shift cable broken and reverse lever bent 90 degrees. Shifter appears to have been twisted or forced".
