I was in Franklin for medical reasons when my much loved 2018 Ridgeline failed to start for the first time. It turned out to be a minor problem with a happy ending. My only regret is that I live in North East Alabama, a 2 1/2 hour drive from from the Waltrip Honda Dealership which is not practical for regular scheduled maintenance. I’ve gone back and forth on buying a van for years. I’ve been a loyal Toyota owner since the late ’90s, but once our family grew, the Highlander just couldn’t cut it. Two car seats in the middle row meant using the third row wiped out all our cargo space. Every road trip meant renting a van, and with three to four big trips a year, that wasn’t sustainable. With two weeklong trips planned this summer, I finally decided to buy. I started with the Toyota Sienna, it felt like the natural next step. But Beaman Toyota didn’t have any on the lot and wanted a $500 deposit just to bring one in. That turned me off. So I reached out to Honda and was connected with Mazio Rhodes at Darrell Waltrip Honda. Total game changer. Mazio actually listened, didn’t waste my time, and had the Odyssey Elite I wanted right there on the lot, just in a different color. No pressure, no xx. My six-year-old son, Liam, was with me both times we visited. He had a blast, thanks to the cool showroom and the front desk team giving him cookies. It made the whole process enjoyable, not stressful. Mazio knew I’d done my research, so he focused on real features and skipped the sales pitch. Even when I realized my driver’s license was expired, he adjusted on the fly and drove the van himself so I could still get a feel for it. Two days after placing my order, the exact van I wanted showed up. Trade-in and purchase were done that same day. The finance guy, Quanda, yes, “Quanda from Honda”, was great too. No pressure, clear info, and made both me and my kid laugh. That matters more than I can explain. I lost my wife to stomach cancer last December. I’m solo parenting two little ones while working full-time. So to go through a big purchase like this and not feel stressed or hustled was a gift. I walked in expecting another dealership headache. I walked out feeling taken care of. That’s why I left Toyota after 20+ years. The Odyssey checked every box, more space, sliding second-row seats, and still runs on gas. But it was Mazio and Quanda who sealed the deal. If you’re thinking about making the switch to a van, go see Mazio at Darrell Waltrip Honda. He gets it.
