I am not the type of person that enjoys the process of buying a car, but at Courtesy Hyundai I was pleasantly surprised. Very straightforward and professional. I drove home in a new car that night. Watch out for the Dealer Added "Packages" I have bought enough cars in my life that I know that purchasing a vehicle is going to be a long and fairly uncomfortable experience. I have actually I have bought enough cars in my life that I know that purchasing a vehicle is going to be a long and fairly uncomfortable experience. I have actually had some good experiences with purchasing Hyundai vehicles in the past, from other dealers. I know that dealers take steps to maximize their profit; however, for this particular experience I was not prepared for the "Florida Décor" package that this dealer automatically installs on Hyundai vehicles as soon as they are delivered to the dealership. The package consists of: wheel locks(est. $25), window tinting (est. $100), pin striping (est. $50), and nitrogen in the tires (est. $0). This is applied at the dealership, when they receive the car, even though many customers may not want these options: wheel locks are inconvenient, especially on wheels that people are very unlikely to ever want to steal; window tinting on front driver/passenger windows is not recommended by the NSC as it may limit vision at night or during reduced lighting conditions; sticking a piece of vinyl pin striping on a vehicle is considered by many people to simply cheapen the car; and, the car arrived from the factory with air already in the tires, it is not possible for the dealership to completely evacuate all factory air and replace with nitrogen as well as the fact that, other than under race conditions, 100% nitrogen in a tire does not provide any advantage in safety, ride quality, or tire durability (we must remember that the atmosphere is 78% nitrogen to begin with). For this particular "package", the dealership adds $1,495 to the MSRP. Since I acquired my pricing through TrueCar.com, the dealership was willing to reduce the price of the package to $822. Needless to say, I was unwilling to purchase the car until the price of this package was completely removed from the negotiation. I completely understand that the dealership intention to drop the price of this package, during price negotiations, to make the customer feel like they are getting a good deal. The problem is that this practice does a disservice to Hyundai as a corporation. To the uninformed, it makes the car appear to cost more than it should ( in this case MSRP $17,495, dealer sticker $20,260 )and they will consider other car makers for their purchase. To the informed, it makes it appear that Hyundai corporation is trying to take advantage of them by artificially jacking up the price of the vehicle. The dealer had already added: Carpeted Floor Mats, Cup Holder Insert w/console, Cargo Net, Cargo Tary, First Aid Kit, and Mud Guards. These are already $445 worth of high profit dealer installed options. These I am willing to pay for because I know a dealership has to make a profit to stay in business. The other thing about this experience that disappointed me was associated with the money that the dealership owed me as part of the transaction. If someone tells a customer it will take two to three days, then it should not take longer than three days for them to get money owed to them by the dealership. If it is going to take five days, that is what the customer should be told. When, after four days, I tried to determine the status of the money that the dealership owed to me, I could not get anyone in the Finance group to return my repeated voice-mail messages. You know that they are not going to deliver the car to you if you owe them money; they expect their money at the moment of purchase, but if they owe you money, that is a different story entirely. I was specifically instructed, by the salesperson, and the finance person, on how to complete the survey. After completing the Hyundai survey absolutely honestly, I received an email berating me for not following the instructions on survey completion - thus, the low mark for friendliness. All that being said, I very much like the Hyundai line of vehicles; and the price to feature ratio is better than any other manufacturer. This is my third Hyundai purchase in the last four years, and I also convinced my roommate to lease a Hyundai when the lease expired on her Honda. I just feel it is so unfortunate that there are dealerships making a bad impression that is directly associated with your corporation. More
