Not even a year ago, I purchased a 2016 Dodge Charger from Courtesy Dodge that was certified pre-owned. Unbeknown to me, the car actually had an issue with the transmission when I purchased it. When coming to a stop and the car shifts from 2nd to 1st, the car would stutter a bit; I assumed it was just the brakes from sitting on the lot. Three (3) weeks later, the car has begun to slip when shifting, the stutter when stopping is now extreme, it clunks when shifting, and the telltale whining of a sick transmission is there. So, I take it in to have it serviced at the dealership since it’s under warranty. I’m told that it lost 3.5 quarts of transmission fluid. They sealed it up and filled it with transmission fluid. Its important to note that my car has a sealed or lifetime transmission - designed to keep people out of it. I was skeptical that it wasn’t damaged from losing so much, but took it home. Four (4) weeks later, it starts doing it again and now sporadically decides to not start. I take it back in and they couldn’t find anything wrong, so they reset the computer. They also inform me that there was some electrical wiring around the transmission pan (that they worked on before) that was damaged, which was causing the car not to start. I take it back for the same thing two (2) more times, four (4) times in total, and get the same response. Someone recommends taking it to another dealership for a second opinion, so I take my car to Zeigler Dodge in Grandville. They go through the process, can tell something isn’t right, and order a part. When the part arrives, they drop the transmission pan to install it, and they call me asking if I’ve had a transmission flush on the car. I didn’t know what a transmission flush even was, so he explained it to me and no, I have not; the only place I’ve taken it in the time that I have owned it is Courtesy Dodge. When they dropped the pan, they found that the wrong transmission fluid was in it, which was improper maintenance and voids the warranty. There were metal shavings from the transmission in the oil too. The transmission was not repairable, costs $5321.71 to replace, and the manufacturer’s warranty was voided because the wrong fluid was in the car which meant that I would have cover the cost. The service advisor gives me the number for Chrysler to call and told me to ask them to still cover it since it was one of their dealerships that put the wrong fluid in it. I do and the case manager on my claim says she just needs to contact both dealerships. When she spoke to Courtesy, they told her they NEVER put any transmission fluid in my car. Well they either did and put the wrong fluid in, or they didn’t, lied on the service papers, and sent a customer away with a transmission low on fluid. So which lie are we going with? The service records contradict that, so the case manager escalates it to her supervisor, who escalates to the district manager that oversees the entire area, Gordon Davidge. Gordon tells me that Courtesy has decided that they did put transmission fluid in my car, it was the right fluid, and they wouldn’t cover it. Luckily that is not where this story ends. A Dodge dealership in South Dakota caught wind of this and recognized that the entire thing is ridiculous. They did some research and told me that if I can get the car to them, they will fix it/replace it. So we load my car on a trailer and tow it 640 miles back to South Dakota. The most priceless part of this? They had to ask Chrysler for approval to replace the transmission under the warranty, and Chrysler – who would read all the service records, including the ones that state the issue with the fluid – approved their request. It wasn’t Chrysler that denied it the first time. Courtesy hid behind their area manager and left me, the consumer, to deal with it and clean up the pieces. More
