Kenyryl, Thank you for your comments and the opportunity to address your concerns. You brought your 2005 GMC Canyon truck with 181,096 miles to us on July 9, 2019. The “service engine soon” light was on, and the engine was running very rough with no power. You also stated the truck was using about a quart of oil a week and that you had valve seals in the head replaced by another shop recently, which we would assume was an attempt to correct the oil usage issue. The improper running condition of the engine needed to be addressed before any other issue could be assessed. In addition the vehicle’s running condition was most likely dumping excessive fuel into the combustion chambers and washing down the cylinder walls affecting cylinder/ring lubrication and contaminating the engine oil. The diagnosis revealed 5 engine computer codes/issues for engine misfire, improper engine operating temperature and evaporative emission system issues. We repaired items affecting the misfiring and replaced the engine thermostat and changed the engine oil. The vehicle ran fine and we test drove it numerous times. You declined to have us repair the issues with the evaporative emission system. We explained that we saw no appreciative engine smoking issues, but that the accumulation of engine oil and unburned fuel due to engine misfiring in the crankcase ventilating areas, catalytic converter, and exhaust system may be some cause of smoking and driving the vehicle to burn this out and then monitoring the oil level would help determine engine oil consumption. When you returned after driving it somewhat, we verified with you the oil level was down, but the engine was running fine. Assuming the valve seal work you had done was done correctly, the most common culprit is the piston oil rings. With the high mileage this engine has, we recommended a remanufactured GM engine, because as rebuilding or even attempting any more short cut repairs on this high mileage engine is too risky an endeavor and we do not recommend doing so. To sum up, if you wish to correct the oil usage and continue driving this truck, we recommend that you have a remanufactured GM engine that would carry a 3 year, 36,000 mile GM warranty installed. We appreciate your business and are willing to install the GM engine if you elect to go this route.

The engine oil consumption continued after the valve job was done. My bill states the oil consumption problem was addressed which it never was. I was also told I would be given multiple options when a the problem was figured out. Well the problem was never diagnosed and the only option was a new GM motor. How can you recommend a new motor without giving a diagnosis? I know the truck has miles, I just want to know what's wrong with it. Not only did I not find out, I paid for not finding out.
