In the processing of your deal we miscalculated the taxes and fees that your state charges. Not realizing this at first, we continued the process of doing your motor vehicle work. We should have caught the error when the motor vehicle work was not processed properly due not collecting the proper taxes and fees. We did not catch this. All motor vehicle processing continues to lag due to the lingering issues with the pandemic added to the confusion and delay. Your state will not issue license plates until all the taxes and fees are paid. When we finally discovered this, we called you and gave you the bad news. Yours is not the typical Baker experience and we truly regret that we let you down. Changes in staffing and procedures have been implemented to prevent this type of situation from occurring again.

You did miscalculate the taxes, but you paid almost the correct amount anyway. Maybe it was the old staff trying to do the right thing and deliver good customer service, but you sent the state an amount that was only $48 short of the amount due. They sent me this notice requesting the $48, and I passed it along to you. Had you asked me to pay the $48, I would have been pretty cranky. But you didn't ask for $48 that the state was short, but $792. That is $48 that went to the state and $744 to you. To come back four months after the sale and demand more money is unethical. And let's not set aside the fact that it was FOUR MONTHS after the sale. Four months of car payments while my vehicle sat without a license plate in the garage. This was not a pandemic delay; my paperwork sat until I inquired in March. At that point, I was told the hold up was that you needed my insurance card -- which I provided when I picked up the car -- and a VIN inspection -- which in May I was told was the incorrect inspection. Maybe it is all innocent and I am the only customer who has gone through this with you. But it doesn't excuse the fact that I chose to do business with you and paid you almost $60K, and this is how I was treated. The bottom line is that mistakes were made, but you foisted the cost of all of them on your customer. The lack of accountability from Baker is staggering.

The vehicle the customer purchased was a used, modified, Jeep Wrangler. It had an aftermarket lift-kit and extra-large tires and wheels installed. It’s a 2018 that was driven by the previous owner at nearly 30,000 miles per year --- closing in on nearly 90,000 miles! It has as many miles as a vehicle that’s more than twice as old. This vehicle was given its full used car inspection service. Oil was changed and washer fluid added. We replaced wiper blades. A tire pressure sensor was changed. We replaced a broken windshield. We replaced an exhaust gasket and flange head. We replaced the catalytic converter. We replaced the TIMP detector and vapor canister. There is never anything that a service department can do to make a well-worn used vehicle brand new. We inspected the Wrangler and repaired or replaced what was indicated. Baker Jeep was very thorough – we did more than just the minimum. The Wrangler was even sold with a warranty from the dealership with the maximum coverage as required by law. The customer was offered an extended warranty plan that he opted not to purchase. If the customer had opted to purchase the additional warranty, his leaking radiator ---- that gave no indication of a future failure at the time of sale ---- could have been a covered repair. The customer complains of a bent frame. The CarFax (a copy of which the customer signed) shows No Structural Damage and No Accidents or Damage reported. The Wrangler drove just fine in our road test. Leaking and dripping gaskets and seals from various parts of a vehicle as the customer has described can be nothing more than typical and normal wear and tear. The usual mileage driven by most motorists is between 10,000 and 15,000 a year. The customer purchased a very used vehicle that was driven nearly twice that much! It stands to reason that components that are designed to wear out would do so sooner than later – including the radiator and thermostat. A car is like a light bulb – it’s good until it’s not! There is no way to predict when any component will fail. There is no mystery here, the Wrangler in question was driven a lot in a short period of time. Baker Jeep cannot be held responsible for normal component failure beyond our control due to extreme use. We truly regret the customer’s dilemma. We’re also sorry about the license plate situation. Every state’s DMV continues to be impacted by the Covid-19 issue. Baker Jeep has no control over the lack of service by state agencies and this customer is not alone in waiting for license plates. Our Service Manager says that he spoke to this customer – but if the customer says that no one did, that’s fine.

All of the excuses and grandstanding do not change the fact that you sold me a vehicle almost 4 months ago and I still do not have a license plate and not one manager has cared enough about a customer to simply just call me back as I was promised repeatedly over and over. I have not gotten a response from any manager until this. This proves my point that all you care about is the money and do not care about the customer or responding to a customer until it’s going to cause you a problem.
