Singular service! Epic fun new car buying experience. After a few years waiting for the Chevy Volt 2nd generation to arrive in Alaska, I thought I'd check online for inventory as we were making a trip to After a few years waiting for the Chevy Volt 2nd generation to arrive in Alaska, I thought I'd check online for inventory as we were making a trip to Anchorage. The Volt's gas engine range extender seemed the best option for our more remote town location in Alaska, where there are currently no charging stations listed anywhere. I had spoken a few months ago with an older Volt owner in the Anchorage Sam's Warehouse parking lot. There is an almost weird glow of admiration for the car in the eyes of Volt owners, in this case, only after he realized I was not harassing him about driving electric here in oil country. The used Volt owner berated the lack of dealership supply of Volt's and sang praises to the car instead of pulling a gun on me, which I suspected was his first instinct when I turned suddenly from walking past to ask him about his car. To my very great surprise after making the call to the dealership on May 1st, Chevrolet of South Anchorage right next door to our hotel listed one in stock. More over, they had chosen exactly the trim and options for their showroom model that made the most sense to me personally. We just had to see the metallic color in person to be sure on that difficult to photograph detail. They did take the best picture of all the other dealers I looked up online, though. Daniel Rogers read the exhaustive emails I sent him, and replied immediately and sent me the car's details. He followed up to confirm our visit time, and was ready to show the nicely detailed Volt in the showroom, as well as let us drive it out and around. It is brand new technology, and he showed us that all the annoyances of our past vehicles had been eliminated in the Volt. Lots and lots of really nice little details taken care of, things you'd look for in an Acura, or Mercedes, and not traditionally in American cars of the past. It was a long stretch to take brand image from the Acuras that my wife has had for the last two cars, to a Chevy. Everything went nicely, though, and Daniel even demonstrated that the Volt won't let you lock your keys in the car, but gently honks at you and unlocks the door before you can walk away. That beat out the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid nice trim loaner car, that locked her out of the car on its own volition when she stepped out of it to take a picture. A $40 tow truck driver to open the Toyota picture! Score one for Chevy! But, the May 1st deadline from Chevy for the zero interest financing had passed by the time we got there on May 5th, and I had asked him on the 1st if it could be held over. He had listed other states where the deal continued, and handled my razzing about it evenly. Again, the story evolved with even better service as Daniel introduced us to his Executive Manager Jamie Turner, who quizzed us from his recent Volt training with Chevy to see if we knew all 4 ways to recharge the Volt battery. This answered the one pedal mode that is labeled "Low" on the shifter, which is actually just auto regeneration mode when you take your foot off the gas pedal. At first we had been unable to find that mode, leaving us with only three answers of the four. So, with Jamie up one point on my research test, I asked him if he could get us the 0.0% finance plan that had lapsed. Always fun to throw a curve ball at the big hitters. He disappeared for a while, and Daniel introduced us to Randy Walton, one of their mechanics, who had leased a 2013 Volt for 3 years. Randy and Daniel brought us chilled bottled water, which was really nice in the dry early spring weather. Randy was an even better salesman in many ways than the competent Daniel, because of Randy's first had experience with owning a Volt. He confided in us that he leased the Volt with the quiet intention of proving the inferiority of electric cars, they being an obvious irritant to someone with a gas powered car repair career. He said that he practically maltreated the car in his aggressive driver testing, and it never once showed any flaws or problems. My wife asked him very good questions, which he answered immediately, like that he had left it outside in the freezing Anchorage weather the whole time, and it never showed signs of battery performance deterioration, and he had only one gripe, that sometimes snow and ice would freeze on the battery recharge door from being left out, which he understood was not the car's fault. Here was a dyed in the wool roaring V8 engine fanatic, whose life career was being around these vehicles, and he missed his electric Volt like a family member when his lease ran out. He said he would have bought ours before us if he was not paying off his Chevy pickup already. Randy asked me if Daniel had put my wife's test drive in Sport mode, and his eyes lit up when I said "no". I asked if he was going to be in the next day on Saturday, and he said he would come in to see what I thought of the get up and go of the Volt in its less economical mode. I agreed. My wife was quietly impressed with the Volt, but would have been happy enough, maybe to drive a cheap used car until we were car sitting the Camry for friends again in the fall. She said the zero financing would be her barrier to saying yes to buying the Volt. But, she did not protest when we went back before our final grocery shopping before the 220 miles drive home again. We walked quietly into the showroom, and I tried playing some very challenging bass music to popping limits on the Volt's sound system from my iPhone through wireless bluetooth, and which my wife was waving at me could be heard throughout the building. Hey, everyone has their standards for purchase quality! No squeaks or bumps from our friends at Bose audio. Randy came in, and almost walked past us as he was looking for the Volt's previous parking space in the showroom. He was extraordinary in his sincerity that he was jealous if we were able to get into the Volt, and promised that we would have our minds blown over time with how truly amazing the vehicle is. He had brought more bottled water, hitting my wife in the dehydration phobia sweet spot. Daniel came running in, a little flushed, and probably teased by the other guys that we had managed to sneak in past him. Soon after the Executive Manager, Jamie also came in with two pieces of paper for us. "It was always there, just had to look in the right spot" he said. One paper had 72 months @ 2.9% interest circled, and the other had 60 months at 0.0% interest circled. He confirmed that there were no complicated workarounds, but that the lapsed zero interest deal had been for 72 months. So, these folks worked our sales nuances nearly perfectly, AND without uncomfortable pressure. I shook Randy's hand, and told him I was off to try the Sport mode. Daniel started the paperwork with my wife after he and I got back from another, more man oriented, test drive onto the freeway on ramp, followed by a little bit of rigorous subwoofer testing. A most impressive car all around. Randy and my wife went around the whole vehicle, and they were able to find a couple of really tiny cosmetic issues that about nobody else would have ever seen, and we were off the paperwork races. Daniel Rogers stepped in to clarify a misunderstanding that would have interfered with our credit check, and broke into a big smile when the simple issue was dismissed easily. Daniel typed as quickly as possible through all the questions and fields on the computer, taking dictation on some Hawaiian spellings in the process. Then we were quickly over to Calvin Graham, the Finance Manager to close out all the bank details. Those Hawaiian spellings helped him break into personal stories about his first and recent trip to those islands, and we had a fun time sharing stories from resident and tourist perspectives, as he effortlessly entered details into the computer at the same time. That phrase, "zero percent interest" rang nicely from him, as we turned down again the pre-paid oil change plan, (the Volt has very few oil changes needed compared to regular cars, running it's gas engine primarily as a generator, and that only as needed) and unusually, agreed to an extended service time period of six years over the initial three for an additional $1600. FOR NO INTEREST. See, it still sounds so beautiful! Dan Rogers took us out to the Volt to talk to OnStar inside the car's own system, and get the demo session set up with the OnStar people that would respond to pushing a help button in future use when needed. After that, Dan gave us the summary purchase packet, and promised to take the car off the market and showroom, and would call us when the minor cosmetic issues were polished up. After that, we were off to Sam's Warehouse ourselves. And it was amusing to think that the next time we were there, people like us would be walking up to ask us about our Volt while we are loading groceries into the generously accessible hatchback. We had only driven up for 2 days and 9 hours of driving, to have a city shopping and getaway break. We left with an amazing car deal, discounted about $1600 off comparable options on Chevy's website to start with, on the showroom floor with all the options we wanted specifically, with a $7500 tax rebate, and advice on how to process it best from a prior owner, lots of bottled water and honest conversation from an inside mechanic's perspective, coordinated service from the top manager to the janitorial staff, a little bit of grueling test driving and loud music, and almost no stress or anxiety through the whole process of being an early adopter in cutting straight across both mainstream America driving gas powered vehicles religiously, and moving to a brand name more associated with the 1990 pickup truck with a smashed in side that I bought from a guy who was living in it, so we'd have something to drive the garbage to the dump. It is painfully hard to get anything unusual in Alaska, even worse when you pay the shipping to get it up here, and frightening to think about finding someone to maintain it because we live so far away. Calvin told us they'd tow it for free if it broke down, and Randy had told us other people's anxieties with no small amount of glee, when talking about the meeting he had been invited to by the local power company among a small group of electric car drivers. Fancy Tesla owners can hardly leave Anchorage because there are no charging stations to get them back. They were apparently very emphatic that power company start installing charge stations in remote highway locations for them. And they were even more astonished than anxious at the two smiling Chevy Volt owners who can drive anywhere they like, using gasoline for long road trips in our wilderness, and batteries only in town for day to day trips. It the day after, I'm not even driving the car yet, and I'm already smiling thinking about this whole experience. THAT is something that nobody expects from buying a car. Much less from buying a new kind of car, out of town, and unexpectedly. Unfortunately, I missed the hamburger fry they were throwing at lunchtime, because we were too busy interviewing a company mechanic, who was only anxious to make friends with us in the still small electric car club in town. Seriously, guys, it was still a perfect job, I'll buy you a whole pizza next time we come to see you! 5 Stars. More
