Went to test drive a used Subaru Forester after speaking with a sales rep (Montana) over the phone. Explicitly stated the cost/financing parameters I had to stay within. All went smoothly, including transpa with a sales rep (Montana) over the phone. Explicitly stated the cost/financing parameters I had to stay within. All went smoothly, including transparent communication & negotiation about OTD price (list +tax, title, & registration). I reiterated the total OTD price & financing parameters to the sales rep at least 3 different times during the course of our discussion. I also informed him that if OTD total or financing values were outside those specific parameters, approval for wire transfer of the down payment would not be granted by the 3rd party program I was to purchase the car through. I explained this was something I could not change nor had the freedom to flex on because of the structure of the program I was working with and their conservative financing guidelines (for the benefit of the purchaser). The sales rep seemed to fully comprehend this, eventually negotiating a fair OTD price for the used Forester. All this took place before discussing the down payment, trade-in value, and remaining financing. I was pleased, and under the impression they were reputable thus far. Before final decisions, the sales rep said his sales mgr picked an outback to consider which fit within said parameters. I obliged, drove it, & loved it. But, before further consideration, I needed to see hard numbers since this was pulled from thin air. I was given a year-old CarFax report. I confronted the rep about it being outdated. He responded, "This is from the last time the car was serviced. We don't pull a new report every time." At every ask for the list price, the sales rep, sales manager (Jeff), and finance manager (Trey) deflected with, "All of that can be worked out upstairs with financing." No one ever produced a valuation of this car, though they had numerous chances to do so. I resorted to pulling KBB values in the lobby and asking if the reported recall had been fixed (referencing the year-old CarFax data). The sales rep reassured me they would check and take care of it during the certified maintenance tune-up. In short, I experienced a night-and-day difference in business practices when I seriously considered the used Outback vs the used Forester. Transparency and open communication were gone. Highly skeptical & ready to leave, I was finally walked to the finance mgr (Trey) office. He immediately began walking me through handing over my key, signing my title to the dealership, and signing warranty agreements. I stopped & stated I'd still not seen any price information on this car and wouldn't move forward without seeing this. The total cost was well over my budget, by a whopping $11,400! I told the finance rep this would not work with the parameters of the program I was purchasing through and explained everything I'd already discussed ad nauseam with Montana downstairs for 3 hours. Trey was less understanding but ultimately said he'd be willing to re-work the numbers. He did something with the numbers, but re-work them he did not. He presented me with the list price before tax, title, & registration, which was just below my total cost parameter. Trey then added the trade-in value of my car and my down payment amount (which by now I had disclosed) on top of this number. He finally added tax, title, & registration fees then proceeded to try convincing me that "the overall cost of the deal we had negotiated" was $31k, and that I was left with my "negotiated" OTD total- 100% of which would need to be financed (not 25% as I'd made clear from the beginning). I told Trey a final time that anything over the total cost & finance amount I'd communicated all along would not be released by the program I was with. As expected, nothing was funded (thankfully), so I proceeded to cancel the contract and pick up my trade-in. It's a shame that things went down as they did. Every person I interacted with could have made commission on that sale if only they'd shown integrity and candor. More
