Bob Pulte Chevrolet responded

WE DID OUR BEST TO BE FAIR At Bob Pulte Chevrolet we would never knowingly sell a vehicle that had major problems to a customer. It’s just not the way that we want to do business. On occasion we do sell vehicles on an “AS IS” basis. This means that because of the age and usually high mileage of a particular vehicle there is considerable potential for a variety of components to fail at some point. Because of this potential risk we do not provide any type of mechanical coverage on that vehicle after the sale. However, there is a high demand for these vehicles because that risk is reflected in a much lower price. Many customers accept the risk because of the value that the lower price provides. The difference between Bob Pulte Chevrolet and other dealers is that we take the additional step of warning our customers of the potential risks and allow them the opportunity to take the vehicle to their own mechanic for evaluation BEFORE they purchase it. All customers who purchase a vehicle “AS IS” must sign an acknowledgement form (which has the word WARNING printed in large type at the top of the page) that says that they have driven the vehicle, they have been given the opportunity to take the vehicle to the mechanic of their choosing, and that they understand that Bob Pulte Chevrolet will not provide coverage of any kind on the vehicle after the customer takes delivery. In this particular case this customer purchased a vehicle from us “AS IS”. He came in approximately three weeks after he had purchased the vehicle with what was ultimately an air conditioning compressor that had locked up. This component was working at delivery and there was no indication at that time that the component would fail. The customer indicated that he felt that we should cover the repair since he had just recently purchased the vehicle. I went over his sale paperwork with him. He acknowledged that he had signed our WARNING Acknowledgement form and that he was given the opportunity to take the vehicle to his own mechanic – which he declined. He also signed paperwork indicating that he was given the opportunity to purchase additional mechanical coverage on his vehicle - which he declined. At the end of the day all indications were that we had been very up front at the time of sale about the customer’s responsibilities after the sale. I empathized with the customer because I knew that he was not expecting to have to make repairs to his vehicle so soon after purchase. Because it was so soon after the sale I offered to split the cost of the repairs with the customer as a gesture of good will. He immediately responded that another dealership would do the repair for less. So I offered to let him pay half of the amount of the quote from the other dealership. I also offered to let him drive a brand new vehicle at no charge while we repaired his vehicle. He agreed to pay half of the lower amount and accepted the offer of a free vehicle to drive. He told me that he thought that I had been straight with him. I thought that we had resolved the matter in a way that was fair to all parties. Unfortunately, this customer didn’t feel that he was treated fairly even though we did our best to be fair. Dan Pulte, General Manager
