To make a long story short, if you’re thinking of buying a BMW from this dealership, don’t. In response to my review, Anthony, the general manager, will insist that from the beginning, his staff told me a BMW from this dealership, don’t. In response to my review, Anthony, the general manager, will insist that from the beginning, his staff told me that purchasing my car would be difficult because I live out-of-state. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It was only AFTER they took my money that conversations occurred regarding the supposed "delays" associated with out-of-state deals. Certainly, at no point did anyone tell me they would hold my car for nearly a month AFTER they took my money. Either way, Antony wouldn’t know. He didn’t bother to communicate with me until six weeks into this nightmare even though I tried to call him. ----------- I bought a certified pre-owned 2018 BMW 440i from BMW of Riverside. The saga began in the middle of March when I first called about the vehicle. When the salesman learned that I didn’t live in California, he informed me that his dealership doesn’t transact with out-of-state buyers. He didn’t explain why. I was astounded by this, as were two different representatives of BMW USA. I guess those of us that don’t have local dealers can’t have BMWs? After I continued to plead with them to let me buy it, they finally agreed, but only if the transaction would be a so-called “cash deal.” I agreed and told the salesman, Matthew, that my bank was prepared to issue a cashier’s check. He declined to accept the check and instead indicated that by “cash deal,” he meant straight cash with no third-party financing. Apparently, dealing with a lienholder during the titling process was too much of an inconvenience for these folks? Because I really wanted the vehicle, and because I’d already come this far, I agreed to buy the car outright anyway. I asked Mike, another salesman, for a copy of the purchase agreement so we could sign it before I mailed the money. He indicated that he could not process any paperwork before receiving my money. You don’t need to be a lawyer to know that purchase agreements are signed *BEFORE* performance is tendered, not after. Suspecting that I’d been phished, I began researching the dealership to ensure that they were registered with the Better Business Bureau, etc. What legitimate business handles a transaction in this way? After I confirmed that BMW of Riverside is, somehow, an authorized BMW dealership, I informed Mike that I would not mail my money without a signed document from his dealership with the vehicle’s VIN and purchase price. He complied by texting me a picture of a sales worksheet with his signature on it. Although I was flabbergasted by this, I dropped the check in the mail and signed the purchase agreement a few days later. Meanwhile, I stupidly agreed to have the dealership ship the car on my behalf on the theory that this would be easy. Wrong. I waited. And waited. And waited. After nearly three weeks with no movement, I got aggressive, and they finally offered the shipper a few hundred dollars more to speed up the process. A representative of the shipping company told me that they ultimately paid $1,000 to ship the car versus the $1750 I paid them. Lord help me, if they initially paid $800 for shipping, it makes sense why it took so long…. What a joke. They kept telling me that I should expect shipping delays; that it is especially challenging to ship cars to my midwestern state. Each day it was another ridiculous excuse. Each day no one even had a guess regarding when the car might arrive. To say that their customer service is terrible would be a gross understatement. Most of the time they didn’t even bother to reach out to me at all—instead, I had to call and text, beg and plead. They took what should have been a joyful experience for me and turned it into an absolute nightmare. The end was just as bad as the beginning. When the car finally arrived, it came without temporary plates or a title, so it sat in my driveway until the title arrived so I could have it plated. Seriously, how are these guys even in business? I look forward to purchasing my extended warranty elsewhere. More
