Never Again, Misdiagnosis of Problem I brought my car in for service due to a "Drive Train Malfunction" error message that impacted the engines output and its ability to shift into gear w I brought my car in for service due to a "Drive Train Malfunction" error message that impacted the engines output and its ability to shift into gear without incurring an excessive r.p.m. Prior to bringing the car to Thompson, the car was taken to an independent Foreign Car Service Center that diagnosed the problem to be an issue with the Vanos Control Computer System. I was told that the system needed to be updated however this update could only be conducted at an authorized service dealership. When the car was dropped off at Thompson, I informed the service rep about the error and submitted the paperwork from the independent service center. I was told that Thompson would need to perform their own diagnosis which I understood but told them to review the document I provided and that I wanted the computer system updated. I received a call a day later and was told that multiple error messages were recorded from the system, metal shavings were identified in the oil filter and that unfortunately the engine would need to be replaced at a cost of > $20K. I asked if the computer system was updated and was told it wouldn't be updated because the engine needs to be replaced and there's nothing more that can be done with the car. Upset with the information received, I decided to get a 2nd opinion at another authorized BMW Service Dealership before I took action to get rid of the car. I told the second service center about the "Drive Train Malfunction" but didn't tell them what Thompson told me about the need for an engine replacement nor did I provide the paperwork from the independent service center. I received a call from the 2nd dealer stating that the computer system needed to be updated and possibly the timing belt needed replacement however nothing could be confirmed until the system was updated first. Upon updating the computer system the "Drive Train Malfunction" error was cleared, the timing belt didn't need replacement, and no other mechanical issue was detected with the engine. The car is now running perfectly at a cost of $480. How can Thompson tell me that I need a new engine at a cost of > $20K only to be told by another dealer that the computer system required an update for $480, confirming what the first independent service center diagnosed? Unfortunately, I will never again take my car for service nor buy from this organization. More

Another issue did cause a concern and options were given as to what direction I could go, wait and see, replacement of suspect part or upgrade to something else. I went with the upgrade as I was considering it anyway. Picked up the car problem occurred quickly, returned the car. Problem was investigated and found resolved and car was ready. I am completely satisfied 6 stars out of 5 More

I went back a couple times to find the right vehicle and Rob Ridgway was excellent. He is patient and works to find the right vehicle for you. Tom Lalicata was also great with communication and tech questions. Lease end return was smooth also. I live almost 30 miles from the dealer and they bring the loaner to me while my vehicle is serviced. Hard to beat the service I’ve gotten over the last 3 years More
