Mr. Finnegan, Thank you for your feedback on your recent service visit. Yes, it's never pleasant having to deliver messages of possible estimates to repair. What I can tell you is that check engine lights usually start with a diagnostic to pay the technician the time to look for codes, evaluate the systems and do a quick MPI. If we have a finding and the customer agrees to continue work, the diagnostic fee gets taken out of the next invoice. I think that it is fair to pay the technician for their time in case the customer decides not to do the work at our dealership. The $300 charge you did pay was for one hour of diagnostic work plus the synthetic oil and filter change which you signed off on. Upon the diagnostic test, we did find an evap leak causing the check engine light which led to a recommendation to replace all evap system hoses, partial load vent valve, 3 way valve and coolant intake gasket and then retest system per diagnostic flow chart. There are many different factors that can cause an evap leak so when you asked what caused it, it is very hard to be specific to your car's situation at the point of diagnostic. The cost of this job is high because it is labor intensive for the QX30 complexities and unfortunately, the car was out of full coverage warranty. I do see that the powertrain portion of the warranty covered a little over $1000. Please know that it is our job to communicate what is needed and the price associated with that repair, even when we know it's not what someone wants to hear.
