Smith Family Motors came to my attention the fall of 2011. I drive a Lexus and my son drives a Lexus so I wanted to see their selection since I heard it was the largest Used Lexus selection in Utah (whi 2011. I drive a Lexus and my son drives a Lexus so I wanted to see their selection since I heard it was the largest Used Lexus selection in Utah (which it was!) I visited their lot along with about 7 or 8 other dealers from Bountiful down to Orem. The funny thing is that on a lark I asked them who else I should go see and they really got excited to have me take a look at their competitors! So, believe it or not they gave me a couple names. Now, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do that for everyone, but let me tell you what I came away with. First, I came away with the impression that the Smith's were unafraid of me visiting their competitors. That's just unheard of. They are very confident that even if I visited another dealer or two that I'd see the difference. I did. Amazing! Thank you, Rustyn and Corwyn! Second, although each competitor was similar to the Smith's (they sold only used and high-end cars) I thought that the Smith's story and way of doing business was a sincere attempt to be the exact opposite of how most dealers perform. I know, I asked, and I snooped around haha. But, they have mounds of evidence that they go the extra mile again and again with each and every customer all with the hope that they'll be seen as sincerely different from the traditional dealers. It worked for me! But--my opinion--there is the reality to being in the used car business that these guys have to face everyday. You see, no matter how honest I believe them to be, or how nice their facility is (which it REALLY is), or how convenient their location is, or how professional they behaved towards me, or how large their selection is (yes, the largest Lexus selection of all I could find), they cannot change the the attitude of some people who walk into their business with a chip on their shoulder against the car business, particularly the "used" car business. Well, that's life, but they're really, really trying, and I give them high marks for the well thought out approach they're using. Oh, one other thing I found is that out of the 7 competitors I visited two of them used the same laid-back approach. Again, I liked it and it validated the Smith's approach. The problem with the other two lots was their selection was small and too varied. I think the Smith's are "spot on" for the majority of people like me, who want to be treated with respect rather than like a "commission". So let me sum up what I think you'll find: 1. No "big brother is watching", no pressure and no good guy bad guy crap. In fact, you almost have to hunt down a salesman. But, when I approached them I was treated with absolute respect and attentiveness. And, you'll pretty much deal with the same person from beginning to end. Nice. 2. As far as Full disclosure goes they seemed completely upfront. All I gotta say to anyone reading this is to READ THE xxxxx CARFAX! Can you believe some people? I ultimately didn't buy a car from them, but not because of anything they did or didn't do (I ended up not needing to buy a car). But, when I do buy I will buy it from them in a heartbeat! The Smith's Rock, people! Try them. More
I feel obligated to counter some of the negative reviews towards this dealership. First of all, this is a different type of business model for used cars than you normally see from the big name dealers. I HA towards this dealership. First of all, this is a different type of business model for used cars than you normally see from the big name dealers. I HATE haggling and playing the price game with most dealerships. I prefer straightforward dealing and a fair deal. I got both of those with Smith Family Motors. I've had my Lexus ES 350 from them for about 18 months now and its the best car I've ever owned. Having learned from previous used car experiences, I went ahead and purchased their extended warranty when I bought the car. It was, by the way, quite a bit cheaper than a comparable policy. As will happen with used cars at times, I have had to use the warranty to fix problems not the fault of the dealership. Every time they have been more than helpful and understand that their's is a long-term relationship with a client/customer. I have been at their office and only had to wait a couple of minutes at most to talk to somebody, usually staff is right there and eager to help. It's true their office is a lot less glitzy and more casual than, say, a typical Lexus dealership. But you pay for the glitz and overhead with the price and fees that are charged at the big dealerships. I personally appreciate the following facts: 1-When I pick up the phone I will be dealing with the original person who sold me the car and their name is on the sign out front. 2-They are immediately responsive to my needs. 3-At Smith Family Motors it's more of a consultative relationship than a sales/buyer relationship. No pressure, they are equally invested in my being fully satisfied with the ultimate choice. 4-They are true to their word. I can't speak to the anger some of the people on this blog have expressed. Sometimes in the retail world we don't express expectations nor communicate upfront like we should. For me, I was clear with what I wanted, I knew my price, there was full disclosure up front (btw, learn to ask the right questions) and they have followed through on everything they promised. How many used car experiences can say that? This is a totally unsolicited recommendation...it's just that some of these comments were complete opposites of what I have and continue to experience with them and don't ring true with the personalities of the folks I've dealt with. I had a bad experience with this dealership. Prices are good. Came close to buying a 3 1/2 year old Lexus ES350. They didn't bother to tell me that it had been in a serious rear end collision-strong enough good. Came close to buying a 3 1/2 year old Lexus ES350. They didn't bother to tell me that it had been in a serious rear end collision-strong enough to deploy the airbag. Had to find out by CarFax. When I confronted them with the information, they acknowledged it but didn't say anything about failing to disclose this. Would not budge on price even with this information. Salesman told me to spend $2,500 more to get another ES350 (same year and almost the exact same mileage as the one I had been looking at). "Get this car for $2,500 more. It has navigation and you will never have to worry about an accident showing up on the record when you try to sell it a few years from now to someone else. Clean car." CarFax was negative so I was interested. Ready to pull the trigger. Took the car in to another Lexus dealer for a full evaluation. The trunk, rear bumper, and both rear fenders had been severely damaged. Plus, the two passenger side doors had been damaged. Then I bought a report from "Auto Check" and found out that the dealer knew all about this-Smith Family Motors had bought the car three weeks earlier on auction where the "damaged unibody frame"disclaimer had been posted at the time of sale. They weren't breathing a word of it to me. Had to find out by spending an entire day (plus $130) getting the information from third parties. Not a good experience. More
Rustyn is the worst sales person I have ever dealt with. He has no idea what "customer service" is. This dealership won't be around for another 1 year because of that. He has no idea what "customer service" is. This dealership won't be around for another 1 year because of that. More
I needed a car big enough for 3 carseats and did not have a lot of money to spend. Corwyn said he would keep an eye out for me and call me when he got a good older sienna in. He called and sure enough have a lot of money to spend. Corwyn said he would keep an eye out for me and call me when he got a good older sienna in. He called and sure enough he received an older sienna on trade-in. It was perfect and runs awesome. I found the whole dealership experience to be non-stressful. They made me feel like an important customer even though I was only buying a $4000 car. I recommend them to everyone and will definitely go back when I have more money to spend. More
