I reached out to the dealership interested in a used vehicle, it took several phone calls and texts just to confirm that the car was still available. Fine, understandable. When I went in to see the vehicle, the associate I had spoken with was busy with another customer. Completely understandable considering I’d given him a couple hour window of when I would come in. That said, there were other agents who could have come forward to help or at least accompanied me on a test drive. Once the associate finally got around to us, we spent a good 15 minutes inputting my personal information into their dealership rolodex. All information ultimately that could have been taken from my driver’s license that they had already scanned for my test drive. Irritating, but still falls under the motions of car buying. After our test drive I mention that the tires are about ¾ worn on the truck and will likely have to be replaced in the next 12 to 18 months. Just a simple comment I hoped would drive some leverage in negotiation and the agent agreed the tread was low. My trade is an older vehicle I had bought from auction and I was aware Carfax suggests it likely had its odometer rolled. When we got down to talking numbers, they offered me $300 for my trade and weren’t willing to move more than $500 on the purchase price of the new vehicle. They took every opportunity to tell me what a favor they were doing me by offering to put new tires on the car- a cost far lower to them than the $1000 it would cost me, retail). I understand the risk to a dealership of taking on a TMU vehicle but there are parts on my truck that exceed the value of what they were willing to offer me. It was clear to me at that point that a deal wasn’t going to happen but the agent insisted on going back to his manager. Ultimately I walked out but I almost blame myself for not having left sooner. They came down by $100 increments when we were off thousands on both the trade and the purchase price. Still, this is the nature of car shopping and I thought we were done. I later got a text from the agent telling me what a bad buy I made on my truck and today received a letter in the mail. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite as simple as thanks for coming in. It included a print out of his perfect rating on Dealer Rater and a highlighted review from the customer he says he was helping when I came in. It also included another copy of my Carfax report highlighting my odometer issue and the price I paid for my truck, based on the tax he read off my registration. I wish there was an attachment section here so I could upload a picture. I was okay with not being able to come to terms on this vehicle. I didn’t need my time wasted if they weren’t interested in taking my trade or to be insulted for my past purchase history. All throughout, he was bragging about his rating on Dealer Rater, I wouldn’t have said anything if it weren’t for the letter I received today. The truck I was interested in is still for sale and has come down $1000 in price in the week since I was in. More
