This was my first car-buying experience in several years, the second newest vehic I just purchased a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox on Friday, June 16, 2017. This was my first car-buying experience in several years, the second newest vehicle I have ever owned (and I have been driving a very long time), and the most money that I have ever spent on a vehicle – all very good reasons to be stressed. Not only was I having a difficult time finding the right vehicle, but I had a specific monthly budget amount in mind. I was beginning to think that I would have to settle for something less that what I wanted and then I was fortunate enough to contact Jerry’s Chevrolet in Leesburg, Virginia. Although I was extremely pessimistic and sure that my criteria could not be met, I had some very enthusiastic and efficient people assist me with all of the facets of my car-buying experience: Tracey Lambert, Maia Humes, Joe Hever and Will Allen. They were not only able to put me in the vehicle I wanted, but were able to get me the financing that enabled me to afford it. They told me they could make it happen and they did – all while being extremely courteous and making me feel like I was the most important customer they ever had – therefore earning my 5-star rating! Disappointed O THE WISE - We’d rather just chalk it up as a “live and learn” experience, but we have a responsibility to warn others not to make our mistake of ass O THE WISE - We’d rather just chalk it up as a “live and learn” experience, but we have a responsibility to warn others not to make our mistake of assuming dishonest used car salesmen are an obsolete stereotype. Unfortunately, we learned at least one is still in operation at Jerry’s in Leesburg. When we were considering the purchase (Chevy Tahoe), Harvey, very eager, was in constant contact with us. While test driving, we noticed the stereo was badly malfunctioning, but were immediately assured by Harvey it would be repaired - no worries. We could see we’d need to replace the tires (no problem), and planned for that. When we asked about the brakes, Harvey claimed “we only sell vehicles with 50% or more left on the brake pads.” We had no reason to disbelieve him about either the promise to repair the stereo or the statement about the brakes. When we arrived to pick up the vehicle and finalize the purchase, we inquired about the stereo, and Harvey, in the presence of several others, said it had been repaired. Not far down the road, the stereo malfunctioned again, and Harvey instructed us to bring it back at our earliest convenience to be corrected, which was fine with us. Shortly thereafter, the brakes began to make an awful noise, and we drove directly to a local shop (Maryland). We learned the brake pads were nearly gone (the warning tab was scraping) and had to be immediately replaced (costing us the $1,100 we had set aside for tires). We saved the pads and took them to the state police, where they were declared to have been “barely legal.” So much for the “50% or better” claim. During this time we’d been trying to arrange for the promised stereo repair, but the once eager Harvey had become impossible to reach by phone, text, or email. Weeks passed, with zero response to our many attempts. Exasperated, we called the service department, and learned no work order for the repair had ever been placed. Finally (coincidentally?) just after the 30 day warranty expired, we were miraculously able to get in touch with Harvey, who had complete amnesia about his promise to fix the stereo. He actually became adversarial. His manager told us we “should have gotten the promise in writing.” Advice (he must know Harvey well) that came too late for us, but hopefully not for you. His manager did “compromise” by offering us half toward the stereo repair, which was small consolation for the amount of time and energy it took to “resolve” this, not to mention the surprise brake repair we also had to absorb. Jerry’s “Let the competition beware” slogan might more accurately be “Let the buyer beware.” I very much hope that the other Jerry’s salespeople are honest and true. If so, I wish them well. As for Harvey, hopefully he will learn that you don’t really get ahead in life by taking advantage of people. Ultimately, the cost to him will be more than it was to us. More
