Bad buying experience I live in Madison, Wis. and went to Libertyville, Ill. June 21 to help my brother, Dick Aehl, buy a car. He lost his wife of 50+ years on April 30 an I live in Madison, Wis. and went to Libertyville, Ill. June 21 to help my brother, Dick Aehl, buy a car. He lost his wife of 50+ years on April 30 and asked my help in car shopping during what is still a very difficult time of grieving for him and his daughter. The day before, I had a firm “out the door” price quote of $19,769 over the phone for a grey Hyundai Sonata from Brian at Gurnee Hyundai. Brian said Dick could save $500 by financing for a month but I said he would be paying cash. I said we’d be in at 10 a.m. to get the car. When we arrived Brian was not there and Dustin said he would take care of us. I expected to spend 2 hours there at the most; we ended up spending four hours, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At one point we sat waiting for something to happen for 30 to 45 minutes while Dustin was working with other customers on the floor. As Dustin was going over the price of the car he mentioned financing for the car. I stopped him and said the price we agreed to was based on Dick paying cash. After some discussion, John Kokklalis, the general manager who had been manning the front desk with his daughter, came over, said he was listening to what was being discussed and said the price included all the rebates and discounts. I said I told Brian the night before that Dick was going to pay cash and that the financing was an option and not something I had agreed to the day before. John starting arguing about price including all the rebates and discounts and would not acknowledge that the savings from financing was not automatic and was subject to the customer wanting to finance, whereas I had told Brian Dick would be paying cash. The bottom line is that the price I was given included financing, an option I didn’t ask for over the phone the day before, and really was a way of him giving us a price to beat other dealer’s price. In the end I advised Dick to go ahead and buy the car because it was getting to be such a hassle and overwhelming for him and I didn’t think that he, in his grieving situation, should be put through more running around and dealing with other car dealers. Plus I had driven 2 1/2 hours from Madison to help him make the purchase and I didn’t want to start from scratch again. On the positive side, John Kokklalis did give each of us a Chick Fil A sandwich during our long wait of doing nothing. That was just before he left with his young daughter to go to a Cubs game. Stepan, the person who handled the final paperwork, was very sharp and efficient. After Dick paid for the car, Christian, a June high school graduate who will be going to college in the fall, instructed us on the car’s features and hooked up Dick’s iPhone with the car. He was very good, patient and very knowledgeable. The Hyundai Sonata looks like a wonderful car and my brother will be very happy with it. He had a Hyundai Elantra for 9 years and was pleased with it. I am not at all happy with the way Brian and John manipulated the financing and price to get us in. Today I got a call from Leo Ziolko at Gurnee Hyundai. He asked that I fill out the questionnaire I received by email this morning and said that if I gave them a 100% rating then some all-season mats would be sent free to my brother for his car. Is that really the way a dealership gets good approval ratings from customers, to prompt them to give good ratings for a gift? More
