I have mixed feelings about AutoNation Carlsbad because my experiences with their sales department and service department have been very different. My wife, Sarah, and I purchased two new Mazdas from Au my experiences with their sales department and service department have been very different. My wife, Sarah, and I purchased two new Mazdas from AutoNation Carlsbad in 2022 and 2023—a CX-30 and a Mazda3 Turbo. Both buying experiences were excellent. The staff was friendly, professional, and easy to work with, and we’ve been very happy with both vehicles. To me, though, the true measure of a company is how it handles problems when something goes wrong. In early July, our Mazda3 developed what appeared to be an electrical issue. The battery had been slow-cranking for a couple of days before the car eventually wouldn’t start. After replacing two batteries through AAA on consecutive days, both of which were dead the following morning, it became clear there was likely a parasitic battery drain. I brought the car to AutoNation Carlsbad and specifically asked several times that they check for a parasitic drain, not just replace the battery. I was later told the problem was simply a bad battery, a new battery was installed, and everything had been checked and was fine. Unfortunately, the very next morning the new battery was dead and the car wouldn’t start again. I called multiple times, left messages explaining the situation, and had difficulty getting a response. Because we were leaving on vacation the next day, we had no transportation and ended up spending over $100 on Uber rides just to keep our medical appointments and other commitments. Eventually I was told I could bring the car back in, but since it was completely dead and no assistance was offered after the original diagnosis proved incorrect, that wasn’t a practical solution. I also left another message explaining my concerns but never received any follow-up. I’m not upset that the original diagnosis was wrong—any shop can miss something. What disappointed me was the lack of follow-up and ownership after the problem clearly hadn’t been resolved. Overall, I would rate my vehicle purchasing experiences here 4.5 to 5 stars. The sales team was outstanding, the people are genuinely friendly, and the dealership is modern and welcoming. My recent service experience, however, would be closer to 2 stars. While everyone was courteous, I left feeling that my concerns weren’t fully heard and that there was little effort to make things right once the repair didn’t solve the problem. If you’re shopping for a new Mazda, I would absolutely recommend AutoNation Carlsbad based on my buying experiences. Based on this service experience alone, however, I would likely look elsewhere for future repairs. More
On the same day I test drove a CPO car I had been eyeing, got a detailed quote with all taxes, fees, etc (note that Autonation does not negotiate base price of used/CPO cars), and later that evening I went t got a detailed quote with all taxes, fees, etc (note that Autonation does not negotiate base price of used/CPO cars), and later that evening I went to complete the purchase. No add-ons, no surprises, nothing during the finance office visit. Picked up the car next day. More
Bobby my service advisor listened to my concerns with my car and got a tech accessing which service was needed. I trust his recommendations and it is always a pleasure to deal with such a professional. car and got a tech accessing which service was needed. I recently bought a Mazda 3 from AutoNation Mazda Carlsbad. The short version: I had my best car buying experience so far thanks to Esme! The long version: I tried checking out the Mazda 3 a year Carlsbad. The short version: I had my best car buying experience so far thanks to Esme! The long version: I tried checking out the Mazda 3 a year ago but it didn’t make financial sense back then to pull the trigger. Esme was my car sales person at the time. She was easy to talk to and work with back then and so when I was in the market this year, I knew I had to go back to her. Like last time, Esme was a pleasure to work with. I liked that she listened and respected my decision to not have the add-ons. I also liked that she was direct with me by saying “If we can do X for you, do we have a deal?” rather than having a laborious back and forth that most of us have probably experienced when working with a car salesperson. If you are in the market for a Mazda definitely consider working with Esme at AutoNation Mazda Carlsbad! More
