I needed a new car badly, but I dreaded the buying process. I pictured an unsavory, aggressive salesperson hustling me into a deal that would leave me feeling fleeced. To avoid that fate, I sent emails to five dealerships describing the exact RAV4 I was seeking and made it unequivocally clear that the entire transaction would be conducted remotely and in writing. I refused to set foot in a showroom. I was disgusted because representatives from four of the five dealerships, all of them in the city, completely disregarded my instructions and called to schedule an in-person appointment. Toyota of Naperville, a thirty-mile drive from my Lincoln Park home, was the exception. I exchanged several messages with an internet sales representative named JD, who secured the vehicle I wanted. With her role complete, an amiable salesman named Edgar submitted the official order, provided periodic updates throughout the month-long wait while the RAV4 was being built, and ultimately finalized the sale. When I arrived to take delivery, Edgar greeted me warmly and directed me to my car. I must admit I got emotional when I saw the big red bow adorning the hood. While my paperwork was being processed, he demonstrated some of the vehicle’s basic features. He then introduced me to Geoff, the accessory manager, who cheerfully outlined the weatherproofing options. I wrapped up the sale by signing my life away with the affable business manager, Ronald. Toyota of Naperville shattered every negative stereotype I had about buying a car. Each interaction was professional and pleasant. I felt valued and respected throughout. Not once was I hustled, and I certainly was not fleeced. I later learned that they are one of the few dealerships in the Toyota network that does not utilize a traditional commission structure. Their compensation is more nuanced and tied to customer satisfaction. Therein lies the difference. For me, it was worth the trek, and I recommend them without hesitation.
