I recently visited Hamden Mazda with high hopes of purchasing a 2021 or 2022 Mazda CX-9, armed with a TrueCar estimate through Allstate. Before making the trip, I had spoken with Samantha Santaella in the BDC, who assured me—after speaking with her manager—that they would honor the TrueCar prices, and we could take the vehicle home the same day. Despite these assurances, the experience turned out to be a frustrating example of deceptive sales tactics and unmet promises. When I arrived, General Manager Wiley Kreiyeh greeted us and introduced us to a sales consultant, Amar. After a long wait, Amar informed us that one of the vehicles hadn’t passed inspection—a strange claim considering it was listed as available with around 30,000 miles. The first car he showed us was in unacceptable condition, with personal items, food wrappers, and dirt, which clearly indicated it hadn’t been serviced. It felt like they were actively discouraging us from purchasing a used vehicle. Adding to our frustrations, the online price for each of the three vehicles we came to see had mysteriously jumped by $1,000. Despite Samantha's reassurance, Amar refused to honor the TrueCar pricing. He even claimed that TrueCar has “nothing to do with” Hamden Mazda’s pricing, even though their cars are listed on the platform. It became clear that this was an attempt to lure us in with a lower online price, only to pile on fees and markups once we arrived. When I asked about a vehicle with a moonroof that had been listed online, Amar gave one excuse after another—missing keys, the car was misplaced, or it wasn’t ready for viewing. Throughout the visit, there was an aggressive push to upsell us on a new CX-90, and every time I stepped away, Amar focused his pitch on my wife, trying to persuade her to consider financing a new model instead. The pressure felt relentless and underhanded. When we finally discussed pricing, the dealership insisted on a non-negotiable $1,000 dealer conveyance fee, which Wiley claimed was “competitive for Connecticut.” The entire process was vague, with inconsistent answers on out-the-door pricing, and no clarity on what additional fees would be applied after inspection. Despite Hamden Mazda’s claims of being Connecticut’s biggest wholesale dealer of new and used Mazdas with “the best pricing,” I found this to be exaggerated. Other dealerships offered similar or even better prices for Mazdas of the same year and mileage, without the sneaky tactics or inflated fees. After all the games and the lack of transparency, I made it clear that I was not interested in financing a new vehicle, at which point Wiley abruptly ended the conversation, shook my hand, and sent us on our way. It’s unfortunate—I was genuinely interested in Mazda’s reputation for reliability, and my wife was ready to make a purchase that day had they been straightforward. However, we left feeling completely disenchanted, and we ultimately purchased a 2022 Nissan Pathfinder SL Premium elsewhere. For anyone considering Hamden Mazda, I’d recommend approaching with caution. Despite their claims of “new management” and a “transparent, stress-free” experience, our encounter was the opposite. This experience taught us the importance of reading dealership reviews, something we wish we’d done before stepping into Hamden Mazda. I hope this review helps others avoid a similar ordeal. More

Quite literally the best car buying experience from start to finish. My sales consultant (Atakan) and the sales manager (Wylie) were incredibly helpful, responsive and knowledgeable. They were patient with me while helping me with a decision, and the multiple test drives that went along with it. Everything was seamless, I received a very fair deal and they made sure to follow up with me after I took delivery to ensure I was satisfied and to see if I had any questions. The experience was so positive, I referred two other people who purchased vehicles there. That should speak volumes!!! Excellent all the way around - would recommend them to anyone. There are two other Mazda dealers closer to where I live but the trip to Hamden was well worth it. If I could give more stars, I would!! And I wouldn't want to forget Lori Xeller in Finance - she was terrific - knowledgeable, efficient and easy to deal with. More
