The rear hatch noises were still there, and I returned a few days later to have it looked at again, with no improvement. After the second visit I also observed that when the hatch closed the latching mechanism clearly strained to lock against the tailgate striker. When later opened, the latch released with a loud popping noise as the undue strain was suddenly released. It occurred to me that this could be caused by the overslam bumpers (one at either corner of the bottom of the hatch) at some time in the past having been adjusted outward (longer) too far, causing the lowering hatch to stop slightly higher than the latch was designed for. To test this I screwed in both bumpers 1/2 turn and test drove the car. All the noise was gone. Over the next couple of days I adjusted and test drove, finally settling on having the bumpers screwed in 1 full turn from where they had been when I left the dealer. All hatch rattling and friction noises remain gone, and the hatch now latches and unlatches with no apparent strain or loud noise. I posted this experience and solution on IONICFORUM.com. One poster replied with his experience, which described how he also adjusted the side bumpers, plus the method he used to actually measure the clearances of all the bumpers. I was apparently lucky that I only needed to adjust the overslam bumpers. The last step of the current TSB does say to adjust these overslam bumpers but goes into no detail about exactly how that is done. Perhaps Hyundai should release an update to the TSB that includes detailed steps to adjust the various hatch components to assure a successful fix, which otherwise apparently threatens to take more time than the dealer feels can put into it with the result uncertain. While I was there the second time, Oscar and a repair foreman (whose name I unfortunately cannot remember), observed that they could only apply the TSB as specified by the manufacturer, and if that didn't solve the problem it was up to the manufacturer to come out with further instructions. I do accept this to a degree and am not upset with how I was treated. I liked dealing with Oscar and will be happy to bring my Ioniq 5 in for service in the future. More
