Terrible experience. The vehicle was advertised online at one price. At the dealership, a mandatory $699 "appearance protection" fee was added on top. I asked to have it removed — the salesperson said no. I escalated to a manager named Ben, who also refused and later left me a voicemail confirming: "If you're buying a car from us, that's coming with it no matter what. So there's nothing we could do with that in terms of taking it off." This is illegal in California. Vehicle Code § 11713.1(e) requires dealers to sell at the advertised price — the only permitted additions are taxes, registration, and doc fees. Paint protection isn't on that list. California's Honest Pricing Law (Civil Code § 1770(a)(29), SB 478) is even more explicit: if a fee is mandatory, it must be in the advertised price. The AG's own FAQ says disclosing the fee elsewhere doesn't satisfy the law. Meanwhile, their own website says: "With us, there are no hidden fees, commission rates, or unpleasant charges." A mandatory fee that isn't in the advertised price is a hidden fee by definition. They also refused my 5% APR pre-approved outside financing and offered 8% after a soft pull confirmed my score was around 800. And I waited 40 minutes before being seen — with an appointment — while roughly 15 employees stood around idle. I've filed complaints with the FTC, California Attorney General, California DMV, Placer County DA, and the BBB. On March 13, 2026, the FTC sent warning letters to 97 auto dealer groups nationwide about exactly this practice. If you're shopping here, know your rights before you sit down. More
