Beware Hidden Fees We just bought a car with an $808 scam fee. They count on the fact that you won't notice and call it a "transfer fee" to make it soudn innocuous. Really it is this common window etching thing dealers try to upsell you on as shown here [1]. Something that costs them $20 probably but they charge you $800+ for. My wife didn't notice it when she called and completed the sale as they just mention it in a list of "tax, title, and transfer fees". This is extra sneaky as there are real title transfer fees that are quite cheap. So if you don't do the math on the fly and realize this is twice as much as the taxes, and most people wouldn't, then you are SOL. They already did it. They say they can't add this to the price on CarGurus, and that is only partially true. You can't add optional fees for services dealers try to upsell. The trick is this isn't optional. They do it already and bake it into the car prices knowing you have to pay it. So it is just a way to advertise a lower price, where as another dealer who gives you an option is not able to lower the cost enough to show such a low price. In the end the price is isn't terrible, but it isn't honest.
