We discussed details over the phone. The entire exchange was very transparent - I was upfront in giving him the numbers I was looking for, and he was honest in letting me know which levers he could pull and what was possible or not. When I met him in person on the day of my appointment, I got to see how genuine of a person he is. He didn't try to adjust the numbers we agreed on.
