Here’s my LONG BUT WORTH READING! I flew in from out of state to purchase the silver 2017 BMW 740i that is now back for sale after a stressful road. Here’s my story and I hope it helps you. After I inquired about the car the owner, Mark conducted a video call to go over the car with me. Mark told me it was in great condition and perfect mechanical condition. As a matter of fact he even told me he himself had been driving the car for the last two weeks. Of course during the video call, he picked out the very small stuff, such as rock chips, scuffs, etc. to make it seam as if he was honest (sales tactic) which I later learned the opposite. I arrived at the airport and Mark picked me up in a different car. Hmmmmm. Wouldn’t that have been a good time to test drive it so we could just make the deal and save everyone’s time? I now know that he must have been afraid that something would go wrong. Well it did but after I had already purchased it. I arrived at his warehouse/recking yard and the car looked great physically. It was in the middle of the warehouse with many other cars surrounding it. He sure knew how to put tire shine on and make it look good aesthetically. After I purchased the car and while driving home the coolant light came on. Thankfully I was on close to a BMW dealer so I pulled in to what I thought was to “top it off”. There are some BMWs that are know for coolant evaporating due to the turbo charger. I opened the coolant fill cap and it was far below the minimum line and bone dry so either A) Mark lied about driving it for two weeks because he would have known their was a coolant leak which I will get to or B) Mark knew it had a coolant issue and tried to hide it. My intuition tells me the ladder. It gets worse! I got home and It was late and I was tired. I didn’t drive the car again for a few days as I work from home. During those couple of days it was raining so the entire driveway was wet therefore I wouldn’t have known if there was anything leaking under the car. During those two days, I paid someone to come and reprogram the navigation and Apple Carplay in my driveway because the navigation did not work. I kept getting an error message. I thought that was also odd. A couple days later I drove the car into town and back for maybe 10 minutes and it was sunny & beautiful. I returned home and went inside. Later that afternoon I went back outside and there was coolant all over my driveway. The coolant light was back on. I called Mark while inspecting the car for a leak and explaining the issue. I was a bit upset because I know this was a bigger issue and it didn’t just happen when I drove it off the lot. I told Mark if he drove the car for 2 weeks like he told me that there is no way he didn’t put coolant in the car. He told me he didn’t. He then spoke over me and told me not to play the guessing game and when I know what it is to call him. So here I am with no car that I literally just paid $40k for. I looked for the leak but coolant was all over everything so I couldn’t locate it. While on the phone with Mark I told him it looked like the radiator was new. He said to me “Yes it’s new”. That wasn’t disclosed to me and wasn’t on the Carfax. That when It all started adding up. Why wouldn’t you tell someone you put a new radiate in the car? If anything it’s a selling point, unless you didn’t want to draw attention to it. Bingo! There had been ongoing coolant issues from what my experienced, the leak I discovered, the new radiator/hoses and the carfax shows a few previous coolant issues. Of course Mark denied any of it. Why would I expect otherwise like he is going to tell me yes it has a leak and I sold to you! After some thought and a talk with my wife, I just wasn’t comfortable with the car at that point and my dealer couldn’t get it in for 2 weeks. I had already been through enough. After some back and fourth with Mark and him being the one to benefit from taking the car back due to it being at my expense plus all I had already spent on it, I sent it back to him. Mark offered ZERO solutions except for me to have it looked at BUT then reiterated that ONLY “Major” things were covered for 30 days such as the engine/transmission which obviously wasn’t this. I read about coolant issues in the 2016 7-series which could cost thousands and had for many others who wanted a recall. This is how Mark accepted the car back. I had to offer to pay to have it shipped back to him plus what I paid to reinstall the navigation (which should have already worked) and Apple Carplay, I also installed new OEM wipers on the way home because I couldn’t see due to streaking (another $80), to mention the antifreeze I purchased from BMW, the cost of my flight, my time, etc. which all equates to roughly $1600. Mark NEVER even offered to pay for the return shipping or at least half! NOTHING. All he said to me was, “I’ll take it back because I believe in that car”! Another overly confident trying to call my bluff sales tactic. Mark knew exactly what was going on with the car and if he didn’t (like he claims) then shame on him for not driving/inspecting it. Any basic John Doe could have found out from driving it one time and/or inspecting it that there was a leak. I mean aren’t you supposed to at least inspect and top off all fluids? That’s why he had the radiator replaced and there was also black gooey stuff all around many of the coolant hose connections as well. Whoever reads this and makes the BIG mistake of buying that car just look to verify that everything I’m saying is accurate. I’m sorry for the stereotype but Mark is your typical slimy car salesman. I know there are good ones out there. If you buy from him you will probably and unfortunately find out the hard way. He’s trying to make a large profit off low wholesale priced cars at auction to make a quick buck and clearly not inspecting them. That’s why he is very adamant about telling you only major stuff is covered within 30 days as part of his speech while signing papers. Just go to his warehouse/junkyard to look at a car and you will see. I learned several lessons here to hopefully help you. 1. Buy from a reputable dealer 2. Listen and watch for red flags (there were many here I missed) 3. Check all the fluids to make sure they are topped off 4. Take a car that’s out of warranty and drive it for a minimum of 20 minutes to bring out any potential leaks or problems 5. Bring an OBD reader to check codes. 6. Listen for slimy salesman tactics and run if you here them. There are too many other cars out there. More
