Do not buy a used Subaru with high mileage (100,000+) from any dealer, especially if it’s an auction car. If you do, buy the $2,500 service warranty, because you’ll probably need it. We bought an Outba from any dealer, especially if it’s an auction car. If you do, buy the $2,500 service warranty, because you’ll probably need it. We bought an Outback with the 2.5 liter engine and had immediate engine problems, including high oil consumption (1 quart to 800 miles). The 2.5 liter is apparently known for oil consumption and no easy fix short of replacing the engine. After spending almost $900 on other engine problems and towing costs, the CVT transmission went out a few months after purchase. The CVT is also used in other imports and just wears out. Dealer quoted nearly $6,000 to install a used transmission, which was more than we paid for the car. A new CVT is about $6,000 plus $2,000 labor. The car is basically junk. Just because the car is spotless doesn’t mean it’s a reliable vehicle. Buyer beware. More
