My story in a nutshell This is a tough review to write but I will be as honest as I can. Overall, I had a positive experience but it wasn’t without its share of hiccups. I l This is a tough review to write but I will be as honest as I can. Overall, I had a positive experience but it wasn’t without its share of hiccups. I live in Sacramento and was in the market for a specific vehicle which happened to be on their lot. I inquired about the vehicle and spoke to someone over the phone and made a legitimate cash offer, pending a mechanics inspection from a local specialist. I made my offer and was told someone would get back to me, no one did. Life got in the way, and two weeks later I called to inquire if the car was still there. This time I spoke to Sergio and made my same offer, and one of the sales managers? John called me back and we went back and forth on the cost of the car, and we ended up about $400 above NADA and right near Blue Book market value. I feel I overpaid for the car given what was wrong with it and the condition of the body which one cannot see in pictures, but overall for a dealer it was a fair deal, and I got the exact car I wanted. We ended up $500 below asking price. At this point I was comfortable moving forward in the process, but being very pragmatic because of the previous reviews of this dealer. First of all, most(if not all) of the negative reviews I read were from people who got “bait and switched” into another car because they either couldn’t afford the car they wanted or got financed at a ridiculous rate. Being that I was paying cash, I wasn’t concerned about that, but I was concerned about the bait and switch, being that my plan was to fly from Sacramento to San Diego in the morning and then drive the car all the way up. So I had the car inspected same day(they drove it to my mechanic of choice) and it came back generally ok, no major mechanical issues, but definitely some things that need work or will need work soon. John was unwilling or unable to negotiate any lower based on the inspection results but again, I was ok paying a bit more for the car I wanted because it’s hard to find the “perfect” used car but this one ticked off most of my boxes. Again, I was comfortable moving forward cautiously though. Being a Tuesday, with plans to pick up the car on Friday I offered to put a deposit down, but they wouldn’t accept a personal check, which I guess is understandable, they wanted me to wire the whole cost of the car to them and promised that if I didn’t like the car I could get my money back. This is where most of my stress came from. I didn’t want them to sell the car, I certainly didn’t want a bait and switch because I was in the market for a very specific vehicle with specific features and I wasn’t going to fly down to find the car had been sold. I also wasn’t going to wire all of the money for the car. John assured me it was “California Law” that if I didn’t take delivery of the car I would get my money back. Well given previous reviews you can understand my hesitation. I asked for something on official company letterhead that said I could get all of my money back, this wasn’t possible apparently. He kept saying it’s California law. I couldn’t find the regulation he was referring to and neither could he, but he was still adamant it was the law, and it very well may be, but yet he was unable to find the law to cite and he was unwilling to give me a written statement that if I don’t take delivery all of my money would be returned. So I took a risk. I bought the one way plane ticket, which worst case scenario I would have to buy another ticket to get home, and while they could not hold the car for me, I called everyday up until the night before to make sure the car was still there. Friday morning arrives and I take the first flight out and Uber to the dealership. Them picking me up in the car would have been nice as other dealers have offered similar treatment but you can’t have everything. This when I finally see the car, the paint is in a little worse condition than I expected. I wasn’t as surprised because the mechanic told me a few things but the swirls and scratches are a bit more than expected. It’s also a 10 year old black car and nothing a weekend with a clay bar and polisher can’t fix a lot of. So I do the test drive with Sergio, who is incredibly pleasant. Everything feels ok, so we stop at the bank and pick up the check and head back to the dealer. The buying process was probably the smoothest one I’ve ever had. It doesn’t hurt when there’s no financing involved. I talk with Sergio and Mark(the general manager?) while we wait about how their Yelp page isn’t doing them any favors. This is a large reason for my long and thorough review. I get it, it’s a buy here-pay here lot, these lots are going to have bad reputations already. Like I said, I was able to sort through the reviews and identify most negative reviews were from people with bad credit, bad expectations or didn’t get their car inspected prior to purchase. So I am about to leave the lot and I am handed the key which is missing parts to keep the battery in place, and I need to use the secondary key to unlock/start the car. I’m told by Sergio this is considered a working key. Mind you I am anxious to get on the road and start my 500 mile trip north. I’m a little upset but he says go across the street to the service center and it was implied to me that the key issue would be resolved. I worked with Zach who called Mark to see how they would handle the key for the car I just bought(and over paid for) and their offer is to get me the key at “dealer cost” which Mazda wanted $300 for, and Siry was offering me $250. And that’s before the $135 to program it. I said I’d do my research when I got home and get back to them. I found a way to keep the battery seated in the remote with a piece of toothpick and some tape. I bought a $25 battery cover from my dealer and just decided to live with the toothpick workaround and some tape. It’s not terrible. And to be fair, this is why Mazda abandoned this smart key design. But I digress. About 180 miles into my journey as I am cresting the Grapevine I get a check engine light. I promptly pull over and let the car rest for about 10 minutes. I called my mechanic in San Diego who inspected the car and he said, sounds like the thermostat is causing the CEL. I then called my specialist up in Sacramento and he also said the same thing. Odd, but re-assuring. They both said the car was safe to drive the next 300 or so miles. So the next morning I take the car to Autozone to have the code read, and my mechanic told me exactly what the code would be(amazing how he knew the exact code, without ever seeing the car and I didn’t give him much to work off of) Anyways the parts is 30$ and the job is a little too advanced for me, especially on a car I’ve never worked on. So I quote the Mazda stealership and get $350 for parts and labor. I called Mark the next morning and let him know what happened and what repair it needed. Two things I want to point out, I’m not accusing Siry of doing this, but I do find it ironic that 180 miles in the light triggered. When you clear a CEL it will generally reset after 200 miles. So that irked me as a possibility, but I had no way to prove it, but I told Mark. I’m a reasonable guy. I did get the car inspected beforehand, I did buy the car as is, but I also travelled so far and did a very easy cash sale, and we talked about reviews at length so he didn’t make any promises but I said let me call my mechanic who opens on Monday(this was Saturday at this point) and see what he charges since the dealership is called a stealership for a reason. My mechanic comes in at $200 for parts and labor. I said I’ll cover the parts, and I asked for assistance with the labor. While Mark didn’t seem to love the idea he didn’t say no either. I get a call from Mark the day I am scheduled to take my car in and he says he is going to personally cover the labor costs. I’m shocked. Also incredibly thankful. But Mark is a man of his word, he gave me his personal Amex(which has already been shredded, so don’t even think about asking me for it) and he covered the labor. So to complete the long review. If your going to do business with Siry, be pragmatic, cautious and realistic. I want to help this lot out because for the most part it was a good experience. I was treated professionally, and while there was some stress and unknowns when dealing with John and not knowing with 100% certainty that I would actually find the car on their lot when I arrived, it all worked out in the end. Mark really helped me out with the repair, which I am incredibly thankful for. Did I get the perfect used car, no. There is no such thing. But I am happy with my purchase. Do your own due diligence and be realistic if you have bad credit. I didn’t have them run my credit but I assume I would have been offered reasonable rates with my credit or I could have come in with my own financing. In conclusion, I feel the risk of taking a one way flight paid off as I am a happy customer with my new Mazda Miata More
