My husband and myself visited Ray Chevrolet in Fox Lake, IL on April 13th, 2011 in response to a newspaper ad they had for a new 2011 Malibu for a very good price. We called and were told that yes, they di IL on April 13th, 2011 in response to a newspaper ad they had for a new 2011 Malibu for a very good price. We called and were told that yes, they did still have the car and to come in. We were also informed that the car may have a few miles on it because it was a demo car. We were fine with that, so we went in on the 13th around 3:30pm to take a look at it. The salesman, Chris W., had a difficult time finding the correct vehicle. We were informed the vehicle was a gold mist and had around 2500 miles on it because it really had been a loaner vehicle for people getting work done on their vehicles. We were fine with that also. We ended up trading in our 2006 Explorer and putting down some cash and came to an agreement about financing that night. We ended up being there until around 9:30pm! We drove home, back to WI and stopped to show my parents the new car. Since it was so late by the time we left, we never realized that they had given us the wrong Malibu! It was a 2011 but it was silver when the one we “purchased” was gold mist. This one had 3 miles on it. We compared our paperwork from Ray Chevrolet to the VIN on the car we had and they didn’t match! I knew the finance person we dealt with had another couple to get through financing after we were done so I took a chance and called around 10:30pm that night informing him that the VINs did not match and we had been given the incorrect car. He asked when we could come back in, I said right after work the next day. We did go back the next day and returned the silver Malibu and received the gold mist one we were supposed to have gotten. Over the course of the next few days, we received numerous calls at home from various banks with financial questions regarding financing. I answered in depth and was informed that Ray Chevrolet had given them much mis-information about us and they were trying to get the facts so they could continue with the financing process. We knew going in that financing may be difficult because we’re both self employed and my debt to income ratio is high because of a previous divorce issue. The salesman and F&I person acted like no problem, done deal.... no one EVER mentioned the words SPOT SALE! I had never heard of this until after about a week, I started researching Ray Chevrolet online (I should have done this first and I would have NEVER went to this dealership) and reading about other spot sale horror stories from Ray Chevrolet. So I’m checking with the finance company on my explorer every few days to see if my trade had been paid off and calling every other day to Ray Chevrolet about the financing and NOT ONE PERSON from that dealership called me back to explain what was going on. When we signed those papers on the 13th, we assumed that we had the financing not that they were still trying to secure it! Also, we feel we should have definitely been informed of the fact that financing was not secured when we left the lot with the new car. Twelve days after we left the lot with the new Malibu, someone from the dealer calls and says we need to return the car, they could not secure financing. I had prepared myself for that after all of the research I had done online during that time while wondering what was going on. I told them we would be there to return the vehicle as soon as I got off work that day. I also decided to call Chevrolet and complain about the lack of information and the way the dealership handled these issues. While talking to the person at Chevrolet, they called the dealership and put a 3 way call on between me, Chevy and Ray Chevrolet. A person named Dan from Ray Chevrolet was on the call with us and was straight up lying. Saying they had been calling us for days telling us to return the car and that we refused. I was furious! I had been calling them for days and no one would call me back about the financing and I was returning their vehicle the same day they called me, for the first time! What they didn’t know, was we only have cellphones, EVERY single call in and out to our phones are detailed in our billing statements with phone numbers and times and dates. I proved that Dan was lying to Chevrolet by submitting copies of cell phone records. They also all covered for our salesman, Chris, for giving us the wrong vehicle in the first place. They didn’t want the owner to find out about that mistake, when we went back in to return the wrong car and get the correct one, the owner was there and Chris wouldn’t even go up to the desk to talk to the F&I guy because Ray Scarpelli, the owner, was behind the desk and they were hiding this from him. I still bet the owner has no idea that mistake even occurred. Dan also tried to turn things around and say they’re not the bank, they don’t decide. He started saying I was a liar and they had been calling us for days to return the vehicle which was 100% a lie. What he failed to realize was that we weren’t mad about returning the car, we expected it after learning what scum this dealership really is, what a bunch of liars they are. We weren’t angry about not getting the financing, going in we knew our credit scores and that self employment loans are not easy. We were actually surprised we left with a new car that day and got financed, or so we thought. What we were angry about was not being informed about it being a Spot sale from the beginning and also about no one returning calls from the dealership, and in the end, about them straight up lying to cover their own butts on the call with Chevy. Good luck Dan, I proved you’re a liar with the phone records. I’ve also submitted a complaint to the IL Attorney Generals Office as well at the WI Department of AG Consumer Affairs. They actually had the audacity after all of this and the lies, to ask if we wanted to try to work another deal on a different car when we went in to return the Malibu. There was no way that was happening, we received our Explorer back and our down payment and never want to deal with anyone in connection with that dealership again. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM RAY CHEVROLET IN FOX LAKE ILLINOIS (buy in Wisconsin, spot sales here are legal, but they don’t do them because by law the dealerships in WI are required to finance your vehicle themselves if they spot sale you and can’t secure financing!) I would not recommend this dealer. We had problems with the cars we purchased the minute we drove off the lot. The salesman assured us they were good cars, but we discovered the cruise control and power wi the cars we purchased the minute we drove off the lot. The salesman assured us they were good cars, but we discovered the cruise control and power window didn't work on one of the cars. My son called them several times, and they didn't return the call. Buyer Beware! More
