Approximately a month ago my wife and daughter were in our 2015 Ford Focus that at the time had approx. 43,XXX miles on it. They were pulling out of a driveway and the car stalled (stick shift). Then after starting it again it stalled a second time and at that time they noticed a bad vibration afterward they could not get the car to move. I went to see what was the matter. When I got there, I started it and right away I noticed that the vibration was extreme so I shut it off and opened the hood. I found the motor and transmission had dropped approximately 8 plus inches. I noticed that a transmission mount bracket was broken. Side note: A week or so prior to that we were notified of a recall on that car for clutch failure. We had it towed to the Local Ford dealer. My thinking was even if it was not due to the recall, Ford cars have 5 yr 60,000 powertrain warranty so "it should be covered". When I got the car to the dealer, they did their diagnostic and told me that it would not be covered under warranty. "It was not internal to the Motor or Transmission, or on the list of Ford Covered 60,000 mile warranty covered parts." Also noted on the quote was that a bolt was missing from the bracket that had failed. Up to this point the car was never even in the shop for anything minor, so to me 1 of 2 things happened. The Ford Factory left out the bolt or the bolt was not tightened to specs. I then proceeded to move the car from the dealership to my mechanic who is honest, easier to deal with, and cheaper per hour. Street Lethal Performance (Terry Johnson's Auto) When I got the car to my mechanic, he called me at work and asked me to stop by before I went home. I went directly there and he showed me the part that failed and the replacement part. Low and behold the replacement part was completely re-designed with more ribs, thicker ribs and a closed end that was where one of the failures occurred. (See photos of side by sides) I promptly called the Ford 800 line for customer support and they told me that if the dealer would have deemed that the missing bolt was the reason for the failure that they would have covered it under warranty. It is very apparent that the bracket that failed never had a bolt in it at all or the aluminum would not still have the raw cast aluminum look. Let's do some math. 4 bolts holding a bracket, holding approximately 25% of the motor/ transmission torque/weight. Now we leave one out and each bolt is holding 33.3....% that is over a 10% excess stress for each bolt. Engineers do not build in that much excess allowance on parts. Not to mention that the bolt left out was in the area of the part that had the most mass to it. I am so thankful that this happened in a driveway and not speeding down the road at highway speeds. I could be a widower instead of just out some money. I thank the Lord every day for that! It just really saddens me that, first, the dealer that I worked at 2 summers when I was in college and where most of our family's cars were purchased did not take care of us. Secondly, Ford and other manufactures should always stand behind what I consider a true manufacturing defect. A missing bolt out of a critical part is pure negligence! More
