In February 2025, I had my vehicle serviced, and the only issue identified was a worn driver’s side axle. On or around March 18, 2025, while I was out of the country for two weeks, my car was stolen. After the vehicle was recovered, I brought it to Penske Honda of Ontario for inspection and repair. Mercury Insurance sent an adjuster to the dealership, and their assessment found multiple critical issues, including failure of the passenger side axle, brake pads, serpentine belt, and battery. Despite the dramatic increase in problems—most of which were never present at the February service—Mercury attributed all of them to wear and tear and denied coverage. The timeline simply doesn’t support Mercury’s conclusion. How does a car go from a single axle issue in February to several major components failing in March—especially when the vehicle wasn’t being driven for ten days and had been stolen in the meantime? Fortunately, my extended warranty with Honda stepped in to cover most of the repairs. It’s worth noting that extended warranties do not cover wear and tear or routine maintenance. That alone indicates that these issues were not due to normal aging or use of the vehicle. My service advisor, Derek at Penske Honda of Ontario, was extremely helpful in resolving the situation and ensuring the car was repaired. I did still pay some out of pocket, but it was significantly less than the $2,300 Mercury would have left me responsible for. In my opinion, Mercury failed to conduct a reasonable and fair review of my claim, ignored the timeline and service history, and attempted to avoid their responsibility. I’m grateful to Honda and Derek for stepping up when Mercury did not. More
