Surprisingly pleasant experience We wanted to sell our second car because we no longer needed it. It was just sitting in the driveway, depreciating at a fantastic rate, as most luxury We wanted to sell our second car because we no longer needed it. It was just sitting in the driveway, depreciating at a fantastic rate, as most luxury cars tend to do. I was going to sell it myself, but came across a feature on Cars.com that allowed the seller to get quotes from dealers. Right away, I was contacted by Sean from M and A Motors. He offered a decent price, slightly higher than another dealer. It wasn’t the price I was looking for, but it was a good starting point. I wanted to sell it fast. I didn’t want to deal with potential buyers for the next few weeks or months. So, I factored in the fact that the dealer also needed to make a profit and decided to take Sean up on his offer to come in and negotiate from his initial offer. I was very skeptical about any dealer keeping their word. However, Sean and the rest of the dealership were very courteous and professional, and they kept their word. I was detailed in the description of any minor damage to the car online. So, Sean was able to give a reasonable offer on it, and he stuck to it. I was expecting him to low ball me once I got there. But it didn’t happen. They did find a couple other things wrong with the car, but we negotiated and were actually able to move up in price somewhat. Overall, it was a quick and actually pleasant experience that only took about an hour of our lives. I think sellers should understand and accept the fact that they will get a lower price when they sell to a dealer. The dealer needs to clean up your car, hold it on their lot, pay rent and utilities, advertisement, etc, while trying to make a reasonable profit from the deal. But, in exchange the seller won’t have the headache of having to deal with private buyers, while their car is depreciating in their driveway. As long you accept that, this can actually be a decent experience. We will be back next year to trade in our other car and try to find a Mercedes GLS on their lot. No guarantee that we’ll trade with them. But, they do deserve that opportunity. More
